Welcome to Westwood Metalworks, What is he building in there?

Moved the strapping, hung the first sheet.

Different hue to the new one....doesn't match the old. Like when you local dive bar repairs that one broke ceiling tile and it stands out from the rest of them....might have to paint.

That's it for today. Golf @3, gotta get ready.

Some strapping and longer wood screws were perfect (cheap, quick and easy). I put 4 on the 18v makita, but only 2 on the smaller ones. The m12/18 I'm not going to do yet, as I'm going to find/buy/trade for a combo one instead.

Took a bunch of other shit out to the barn, and will take another load again tomorrow. Debating moving my sheet metal brake/shear out there too, as that space would be pretty nice to have.....

Brought it in from out there years ago because I wanted to tear it down, clean it up and get it working nice again, but that's probably not going to happen anytime soon.....it's just become a flat spot to pile shit on. Don't want to sell it either....

Been a while since I've had a chance to make chips, or get back to the grinder project, but today/this weekend is it. Having to recreate the lost design has been fun (and soul sucking)....But the past 2 weeks or so I've hit a creative vein for CAD work that I had to mine, and have found the motivation to finish (re)designing the rest of the belt grinder tables and attachments so I can start building them again. I have it not only back to what was lost, but think I've actually made some of improvements to some attachments, and come up with a new one.

Enough talk, here's what I'm hoping to finish today.

I milled the table flat and square last night before dinner. A crusty old 1/2" plate I rescued from a barn floor at an auction about 15 years ago. So I threw a barely still sharp 1/2" carbide regrind at it first to knock the crust off 😀.

I also splurged and bought an assortment of belts (and powdered steel for canister Damascus) from Maritime knife supply that I'm anxious to try out on some up coming projects, so that's my big motivating factor to at least finish this table attachment. The other ones I can chip away at over the winter.

I can tell you, those 3m trizact belts are pretty awesome for sharpening, and I ran that kitchen knife through to only 1200g (bought 600, 1200, 2000) and it very easily does the paper trick under it's own weight, and shaves arm hair effortlessly 😀.

Also on the cusp of a major shop reorganization/machine shuffle too, but that's another story....This belt grinder has caused a disturbance.....

Well, today didn't quite pan out like I was hoping, twas a day of many distractions, but I still managed to find enough stock and adjust the model to fit what I ACTUALLY had (7/8" shaft vs 1" designed, and adjust some block sizes....), then start squaring up and machining things. Not done, perhaps a few more hours tomorrow, but by end of day, I should have an adjustable table and a fully functional grinder (sans extra attachments of course). Then I'll probably actually do a complete build thread on it, instead of just snippets in this one....

Drilled the clamp screw holes at a 15* angle. A long time ago I read about using a ball endmill for spotting holes on angled or curved surfaces. I'll admit, I've never had to do much of it, maybe a dozen times or so, but when I need to, that's been one of those tips that works really well and is worth knowing. Spotted with a 3/8" 4fl ball, drilled 17/64" (M8), spotfaced with 3/4" endmill, then walked it out the end for a flat bottom, and finally drilled for clearance to a 0.3" depth. All Located with a pointed wobbler from scribe lines, and done for both blocks. I used a 15* angle block in the vise to set the angle.

Should have went deeper with the spot here, this one walked a bit on me. Not bad, but enough for me to notice....I corrected it on the bigger block, and it was fine.

Tapped m8 with my recently made tap wrench.

The rest should be pretty straightforward tomorrow. I'll be using the Tormach to round the ends but really wish I had a rotary table though.....Still undecided on how I'm going to do the bores. 2 slide fits, 2 press fits on the link. Leaning towards manually boring them, but will probably interpolate and save a setup.

Busy day, but got it finished. Feeling pretty accomplished right now, this was a big barrier to getting on with some other projects I'll need it for. Aside from a couple small minor details, it's now a fully functioning grinder.

I love it when a plan comes together.....Not without issues though, but I'll save them for the build thread. Lets just say the designer and machinist had a few choice words for each other at times today...and many other times over this build....lol.

Did a speed run of the tools of the trade show this morning in Pickering, and scored some long sought after tools. Picked up a gauge block accessory set, and some small hole gauges. Then a Starrett 91C, and some Starrett adjustable parallels. The 91c has seen better days, but it's usable. I'll try and clean it up a bit, but for $80 for it and the parallels I'm ok with it's condition..... The gauge block accessory kit is brand new.

Ran into Stu, and had a nice quick chat (he beat me to the 91d 😀), but had to run and catch a 12:00 tee time. The way I played golf, I would have been better off sticking around, and buying a few more things lol.

And last night I started making the tension handle for my belt grinder.

Still need to attach scales and do the final shaping. Figured a "knife grinder" should pay some sort of hommage to knife making in the design.....and yeah, I'll get around to making a build post for it someday....I promise....it's been sooooo handy to have around the last couple months though I wish I would have built one years ago. It's messy though......

I had a sneaking suspition (blind hope) that the lone adjustable parrallel I bought at the show last year, was the missing "c" size from the set I picked up today, and yes, I was right. I have a, b, c, d, f now. On the hunt for an "e"

Same for the hole gauges. I couldn't remember if mine (on the left) were the shallow hole type ones or not, but didn't think they were. Turns out I have a pretty good memory, just not for important stuff....

Good thing I'm picking up all these tools I wanted as a machinist now that I no longer "need" them.....

I thought the rule was 'i' before 'e' except after 'c' so you are probably alright to get the 'e' first before the 'i' since you have the 'c'.
Sheesh.... My head is spinning now...

lol

Not sure they make an "I", so I think I'm in the clear...But I did find an "E" on ebay. I'm not sure I have that much tied up in the 5 I have total. I'll pass for now.....

Pretty sure an E would be scam. The 91 only comes as A through D.

The one I sent you is a 174. No idea why they didnt call it a 91-0, or maybe 91-AA......LOL!

Ya, strange naming sequence. Following traditional convention it would be 91-0, then if they made another smaller -00. Starrett is a pretty interesting company....

The "E" I was referring to was for the adjustable parallels. 154-A, B, C, D, E, F. I have all now except the "E".

My (modest) haul:

Starrett 91D, 93A, and 93D. I was especially excited to see the pair of D’s. I bought a 91D new for work a few years ago, and it’s nice to have one at home as well. The 93D is something I’ve wanted for a while. I think I paid $130 for the three wrenches, in total.

The vise is for home, we have the same one at the drill presses at work, and it’s really versatile.
$100.

The files in the roll are Swiss made ( checkering files. Not sure how often I’ll use them, but…
Settled on $50 for the three.

For anyone who’s never heard of a checkering file, they’re for, well, checkering, on gun stocks, etc.

My inexpert attempt on the edge of my workbench:

Nice haul. There were definitely some goodies there. Another hour and another $100 and I would have brought home more, but still satisfied with my pickups. Congrats on snagging that 91d before I did lol.
