  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Welcome to Westwood Metalworks, What is he building in there?

My Keen Cincinnati boots are the most comfortable pieces of footware I own. I've long been a fan of Keen footware, they just fit my Wide flippers much better than others. I also always run 2 insoles as well. Like standing on a cloud....After a shift, my feet are generally the only thing that doesn't hurt.

That's the one good thing about the crocs. They always come off at the door.... Less chips in the house. Anything more than just puttering around out there, I prefer to be in boots. Hot chips on the feet, or welding sparks, are not a fun time...Never tried the Womans clothes. Can see some merit in a skirt though, more airflow over the radiators....I remember reading a story about the british road crews that started wearing dresses when found a loophole in the rules after they were not allowed to wear shorts on the job....

Now, Metalworking......Casehardening.....Anyone done any? Do I want an airtight seal, or would a slightly ventilated case be fine/wanted to let gasses escape. I'm thinking I can make a sliding lid for the top held on with one bolt so that I can get it off quick and easy to quench rapidly. Just unsure of how fussy I need to be making the fit for the lid......Or if I need a gasket in there. I could also make it a wedge shape with a draw bolt too.

Big day today. First sparks.....

Finished machining the wheel, and boring for the taper lock.

Tracked the first belt by hand, and it landed in the middle of travel. Ran it a bit and it didn't budge....I'm pretty impressed.

Still lots to do, platten, tables, accessories (a spot to actually put it....) but now that it actually works, it's a huge weight off my mind.

Once I get the table done I'll clean it up, paint it, then do a full build thread for it. I may have lost the cad model along the way, So I won't be able to go through all the iteration stuff like I wanted to, but I took lots of pics.....

Not sure happy is the right word, but it's close. :)

Every new addition requires a reorganization.....I think here might be a good spot for it. For now.....

This will force my hand to finally move my battery tool storage to a better spot. They just ended up here because it was easy. Never liked them there....

Thats enough for today. Got a lot done, but imo the most impressive was bluing in the taper lock for the wheel and not getting a drop of Prussian blue anywhere that it shouldn't be. First time for everything I guess.....

Back to the shoe conversation. Photo of my 15 year-old Mark's Work Warehouse Mellowwalk slip-on's. Buy them half a size too big, you're not going to be running in them. Kick 'em off at the door out of my shop.

I wore slipons like that for years. Last pair got wore down so much I had to throw them out. New job requires 6" boots. Someday I'll buy another pair of slipons.....

Uno reverso, back to metalworking....

Flat platten done.

Lots of adjustment, and symmetrical 4 ways so I can flip it if it starts to wear.

I have a bit of (re) design work to finish before I get started on the table. Also ordered a vevor vfd for it, which should be here tomorrow. I found my motivation for this project again.....snowball effect, I just needed to get rolling again...
