Welcome to Westwood Metalworks, What is he building in there?

Continuing along this organizational kick.....A few months back I bought a new side table for my spot at the couch. I wanted something that could actually store and hold stuff I'm working on vs the nice round wood pedestal ones my FIL made for the Wife years ago. They look nice but I couldn't pile much of anything anything on them.... So I bought (actually let the chief decorator pick it out) a cheap flat pack bar cart style one from wayfair, and it's been great for piling stuff on. Has a few drawers for those cables I can't throw out too. The top has become a bit cluttered with stuff lately, so I designed an organizer that hangs off the ledge, and has a bunch of spots for various things like sd cards and USB thumb drives. I also included a power bar with USB charging ports into it to clean up cord management.

I'm giving translucent PETG a try this time because I don't think there's enough black on the roll to do this one (By my measure I'm 30g shy). It's a 16:30 hour print due to the translucent filament needing to run slower, so this will be my longest to date by far. I'm very curious to see how it turns out. I'm 45 minutes in and only on layer 3 of 293.....

I'm liking these little organizer projects. They 're a fun quick design exercise and they have so far made big improvements to previously messy areas. Everytime I complete one, I think of 2 more to make though lol.

Finished. Quality is pretty good. Not perfect. Had some corners lift, and there's a weird scratch on the side (vertical wall) I can't figure out what happened, but overall it's perfectly functional and everything fits great.

As you can see, not much of a difference lol.

There's still about a 2" gap I could fit another one in, so I might design one to fit there (could only print 250mm wide) and hold my phone charger and some other stuff. Not 100% sold on the translucent, It's a neat effect, but will try to think of some other applications that it might be a better fit for. Maybe something with some internal RGB lighting or something who knows. I'm not fancy like that, but the kids and nephews might enjoy it. It's good enough for this part, so I'm glad I tried it. It prints so slow though....

Figured out what the scratch is when I went back into the slicer.....

I made an attempt at painting fuzzy skin, and tried to select the entire surface, but just drew that squiggles. I could have swore I undid that, but obviously I didn't. Scoobie doo mystery solved. Turns out I'm just an idiot. 😀

Ya the stand is a bonus. Once the snow clears I'll probably move it out to the blacksmith shed. It's gotta move from where it is because I've already wailed my hip into it twice trying to sneak through lol. Spring can't come soon enough.....

Simple 3d printed dimple die to try out the new press. Just some duct metal so nothing to taxing, but worked great.

I only printed the 1/2" pipe die size to try out for now, but designed one for all those knockouts with both a 3/16" radius, and chamfer. I have a few clearance adjustments to make based on the trial, but it worked great. I'm curious to see how they hold up to thicker material and can't wait to test some to failure 😀. Printed with 5 layers top, bottom, and walls, and 30% infill in PETG.

Picked up an sds drill, recip saw (to replace my old tired one) and a bunch of 3ah batteries for a good marketplace deal this week. They are old brushed versions, but fine for my use, and they're practically brand new. Long story short, the old Makita tools (pre "star" batteries) don't fit the new 5ah batteries. From what I've read its primarily due to the longer run times of the batteries potentially burning up the tools/motors that weren't meant for running that long.

With no great concern about that here for my uses and makita batteries having their own protection on board it was a simple matter of removing a molded tab on the tool battery mount to allow them to fit the old tools.

New batteries won't slide all the way on.

That little tab there is the reason

Here you can see the battery shell difference and the reason that tab won't allow full seating. The slot being full length on the older 3ah ones.

I used a recip sawblade to "file" away at the tab, and in less than a minute it was gone. I did this to the sds, recip and circular saw.

Now all my 5ah batteries fit all of my tools. I just have to be careful about running them too hard, which doesn't happen much for home use.

The only one I didn't do was my right angle drill which uses a different method with a metal tab.

But I have enough 3ah batteries (plus 3 more) and use it so infrequently ill just leave it for now.

Funny you should mention reading that. I experienced the consequences of using a bigger battery (4Ah) on my Dewalt drill when it had only come with a 1.5Ah. I was drilling lots of 3/4" holes into stumps, quite deep and after a bunch I was quite pleased the battery was still keeping up. Then I heard the drill making crackling noises like it was on fire and sure enough some smoke started to emit. I ran it no load for a bit to blow some air through it and its been fine since! But I never loaded it like that again... always made sure to get the old corded drill for mixing mud. Probably also the drill is still ok as its the brushed kind so less electronics to get toasty, just the enamel on the windings.

I've already had the pleasure of smoking a set of brushes in my regular hammer drill using an auger bit to drill fence posts for gate hardware, plus mixing mud and a whole bunch of other stuff one shouldn't do with a battery tool....New set of brushes and it's been fine for the last 10 years or so (still smells every once in a while..), but yeah, corded drills still have their place. Used within their limits battery tools are awesome though.

Nothing like a corded low speed geared drill to really bugger up wrists etc. when you think you need power. I might be guilty of this and have less pain afterwards with a battery drill…

I picked up some goodies at the tools of the trade show today with the kids. A nice leather sand bag for panel beating, Finally found a Starrett 576, a metric radius gauge set, a nicer condition Starrett 91-c than I got there last year, and a bunch of r8 endmill holders. Some single lip countersinks, and a high speed handpiece, plus another slide calculator to add to my collection...

The angle finder is for a coworker that was coveting my starrett one on a job a while back. Handy things. And say what you want about those robogrip pliers, but I love them lol. Good all purpose "grabbers" for hot stuff sometimes 😀

This is my first day off after a month long shutdown, so I kinda just held the couch down, and puttered around a bit catching up on stuff. I finished printing the last of the easter eggs for my nephews and they came out pretty good aside from a couple issues of holes in the walls etc. Good enough for what they are...Each egg contains a different baby dinosaur inside they get to "hatch". All the models can be found here (not mine)

I also printed another hex bit holder for my brushes.

I need to do a reorganization of the tool wall as some recent acquisitions have made it too cluttered for my liking....One of the reasons I love OSB walls......I'll probably just wait until the mass shop shuffle coming in a bit though. Waiting for some warmer weather so I can bring some stuff outside to paint as well. Won't be long. Still 1' of snow across the front yard, but it's dissapearing fast. It's gone from the back field now.
