H-M site down ?

Fun fact. When my Fiancée (now wife) and I went to the power and sail squadron to learn basic navigation and then near shore navigation 1 and 2 the charts used in the course were all from the Victoria area. I guess maybe I should prepare and take tides and currents course now
On a scale of difficulty for navigation the Gulf Island ranks a 5/5 because of the currents and navigation hazards aka, the tops of mountains barely below the surface.

One inch of slush shut everything down ? It's so novel what do you expect.
Vancouver Island and the mainland were two separate colonies. They were joined in1858, but it's still a work in progress.

Your comparing Calgary type snow to Victoria snow which is much wetter… One year I skidded off going around a corner and took out a 4x4 sign post a Cop came around the corner so I flagged him down and he said just jam it back in someone else will hit it sure enough I saw it later even shorter.

I honestly tried to move there, but my asthma got worse, and the dampness gets to me. so no go, even though it is the caving mecca above the 39th!
sorry for your asthma, and you missing out on so much caving there.... but at least you're not in Ontario, asthma causes abound and there is little caving of any note, except one well protected cave we try to keep secret

I do it too. Matter of fact, I did it just recently. In my case, it's just laziness. So with your comment as a cattle prod, I'm gunna go back and fix it.

Edit - done.
You could still use it but using a descriptive word like link, Click here etc. I’m wondering if it could be done by putting in the Hex value in the text for colour or maybe a gif instead of text. Lol

I grew up in Alberta and learned to drive in the snow.
Snow on the island/mainland is a completely different thing from the prairies. It is like driving on marbles when it snows here. And because it generally gets above zero during the day, the snow melts and then freezes at night turning the roads into skating rinks. Not to mention freezing rain which can render roads completely impassable for days. If you live on a hill, you could be trapped for days. When I moved here I had a Subaru Legacy AWD and a GMC K1500. That winter I was unable to drive up the hill out of the neighborhood.

I was born on the Island with severe asthma but always walked to School sometimes slowly having to catch my breath on each flight of stairs or sitting out of gym I never had a inhaler When not having a attack I’d be out on the high bar or the flying rings at Carnarvon Park or riding my bicycle anywhere in the city Mount Douglas Park was a favourite of mine we found one of the caves that we use to explore thanks to the candles donated from the Catholic Church as well as IV bottles. Bed frames and a couple Army helmets we thought was from the WW II internment camps.

Up until Dads passing ( At 86 ) he would don his ancient ice skates and skate up and down Allenby ST forwards and backwards.

My exciting ice event was in Edmonton. We were returning home from my parents house. Very icy with ruts on the road from both the plows and just traffic. Turned right off 156th street onto 87th avenue into the outer lane. A ways up because we were eventually going to turn left onto 149th street I decided to change lanes.

Left over the first icy ridge on the road. Then sideways. Then backwards. Then sideways. Finally pointed back in the right direction in the lane I wanted to be in.

I can still see it happening and that was almost 40 years ago.

I understood why Charleston, SC was shutdown back in 1979 by an ice storm, but I’ve lived in South Central Pennsylvania where freezing rain, black ice or 30” of snow are not uncommon for 40+ years: by the time we had finished breakfast in Vancouver the roads were just wet and since the Sun was out rapidly drying. We were told it wasn’t unusual for people to come in late. The Island was also shutdown, but due to fog.

Denver also surprised me: nothing was done to clear 8” of snow since “it will be in the 50’s again tomorrow so it will melt;” this was 10 years ago when I was in Ecuador on Friday (90+F, which was hot for them) and Denver Monday (-20F overnight). A few years later I was back in Denver: 35F with 2” of wet snow, and the police issued a statement that unless an accident involved injuries they would not respond.

I’m glad I’m at the point where the cars (kind of) fit in the garage

H-M? Am I missing out on a good site?

IMHO, - not really. I've been a member there since June of 2022 and here since May of 2021. There is only the odd time I went there to see something someone here referenced.

There is no harm in belonging to both sites, and there are lots of good people there too. On the flip side, I've never needed to go there because I couldn't find what I needed here.

I think the main benefit here is the common Canadian context - prices, laws, availability, local help, market, vendors, culture. (read our history).

But if you would like to get more input, there are 5x as many members there to hear from.
