H-M site down ?

I found Practical Machinist to be snarky . Since I worked downstream of jobber machinists, I wasn't taking any of that. Though I found their discussions of dial indicators and mics to be interesting.

Yuriy (TouchDRO) has a sponsored thread on H-M and provides quick turaround on questions. H-M members also get a TouchDRO discount.
Rather than being an endorsement for H-M I view it more as a illustration of how Yuriy does not care about the smaller Canadian marketplace, because he could sponsor a thread on here.

Dont mind me, I'm cranky having just come in from running errands.

I don’t think that as a market we are large enough to warrant the expense given that membership to get the TDRO discount on HM costs nothing.

I understood why Charleston, SC was shutdown back in 1979 by an ice storm, but I’ve lived in South Central Pennsylvania where freezing rain, black ice or 30” of snow are not uncommon for 40+ years: by the time we had finished breakfast in Vancouver the roads were just wet and since the Sun was out rapidly drying. We were told it wasn’t unusual for people to come in late. The Island was also shutdown, but due to fog.

Denver also surprised me: nothing was done to clear 8” of snow since “it will be in the 50’s again tomorrow so it will melt;” this was 10 years ago when I was in Ecuador on Friday (90+F, which was hot for them) and Denver Monday (-20F overnight). A few years later I was back in Denver: 35F with 2” of wet snow, and the police issued a statement that unless an accident involved injuries they would not respond.

I’m glad I’m at the point where the cars (kind of) fit in the garage

and a guy comes before Noon to dig us out.
This is just so wrong in so many ways! Here we've been trying to educate our SWMBO that cars don't belong in a garage and you go and post a picture of not just one but two. You've set back hobby metalworkers decades of brainwashing... I mean teaching.... their SWMBO about our shop where we keep our toys... I mean tools.

There are certainly a few snarky members on PM but the wealth of knowledge is staggering, the archives alone are worth registering.

Don't you dare complain about having a small car in your shop

Cars in a garage? What is this....

I don't even think we had anything moved into the house yet when I asked her if she ever wanted to park her car in the garage or if I could have it for tools and motorcycles. She said sure, go ahead, and I think she's regretted that every winter morning she's had to climb into a cold car ever since.....:D

However, Collins did get this usage wrong:

A shop is a place where purchased tools are stored & used.

Another way to look at it is that TDRO is a niche with relatively little traffic and having it all in one place makes sense. It makes any discussion easier for Yuriy and posters to follow and respond.

Put differently, if you want to specifically discuss TDRO with Yuriy and with other users then Yuriy’s sponsored sub-forum is the place to be.

I do not think it’s a question of favouring one country over another. If Yuriy was to go down that path you might have to learn Polish or Ukrainian.

D

On that note, before we had a garage (shop) I made the fatal mistake of drinking my coffee at the table and pushing the button to start the truck while SWMBO was beside the truck scraping the frost from the windows of her car,,,,,, duh. Thus I have less room in the "shop" than I could have.

Surprised it did't cost you a new vehicle (or a remote start kit).

Until my shoulder is well my wife doesn't want me backing her car into the garage: as you can see from the photo, the only way two cars fit is to head one in and back the other (I hate extremely dislike 2- car garages with one door!). She is finally using her remote start feature (and yes, I did offer to leave mine outside).

I really miss having remote start. Last winter was pretty mild so I didn't notice it too much, but we've already had a couple mornings this year where I wished I could just hit that button from the kitchen instead.

I'm afraid your hope is misplaced. RVs have a one year warranty, their hope is you won't see the leak in that time. A RV should last as long as the payments. Even Airstreams aren't immune . If any of you have 12' cartopper boats ,you know the rivets weep. Airstreams have wood floors. They get soft floor, too. Some RVs use chipboard for floors !

It understandable, they use butyl (sp) tape, it's quick, cheap and makes a neat job, it just doesn't work.

I worked in that industry for a couple of years. In our own travel trailer, I dealt with rot after just two years.
