Sadly my lathe motor grenaded on the weekend, I’m on the hunt for 220v single phase 1hp ish motor with a 3/4 shaft. It’s to fit an oddball Bulgarian lathe. I’m in the GTA

I have one like this for sure but sadly I am in Calgary. I am sure you find one in GTA - or get one from PA or Amazon or Motors direct.

Did you check the capacitor(s)?

Thanks, it’s not the capacitors, somehow the pins from the centrifugal switch let go allowing the arms to let loose to reap havoc on the windings.

I have a Baldor 1.5hp. New bearings. Could turn the shaft to size. 2.5 hrs west of GTA

Baldor L3514TM motor
1.5HP, 1725rpm, 7/8” shaft, 120/240V

Thanks, I’ll look up the specs, it’s a European flange type IEC 71 spec motor with a larger shaft, a 56 frame might fit but it’s gonna be tight. I’m also looking at treadmill motors, but I’d like to keep the original switching.

Yeah I have some strange motors like that - picture?

It’s a Mashstroy lathe, made in Bulgaria, looks like the motor was too.

Any way to get it re-wound? I had my 600V/3ph re-wound to 220V/3ph to run a freq for $400. Getting it repaired/re-wound may be cheaper than you think.

I called today $400, which I’d think about paying if I was going to keep it, but I have a Logan 815 with a QCGB to take its place, so I don’t really want to spend that much to get it going, The Logan needs a motor as well! lol But it’s way easier to source!

The good thing about the kind of frame in your first photo is that it's usually pretty easy to make an adapter plate. Your motor looks quite similar to the motor I replaced in my Bridgeport Clone. I couldn't find a motor with same frame. But a simple plate allowed me to adapt in an amazing zero rated motor instead.

Yes, I think I might have to maybe go treadmill motor or something DC and adapter plate, it would be be the easiest route for a narrow motor. I just didn’t want to change the wiring.

Thanks Dan, it looks like the same size frame that @jgimp69 has offered up, I think I’m going to have to reinstall the motor and check for clearance, the chip shield angles right at the motor and it’s pretty tight. I may have to re-engineer the chip shield to accommodate the larger diameter of these NEMA class motors frames.

That's probably the only way to really find out what'll fit, but a treadmill motor most certainly will, and give you variable speed too.....
