@ChazzC How is the shoulder now? Back to benching 600# yet?

Craig
(Is you've already given an update, I must have missed it.)
Hi, Craig, thanks for asking!

The shoulder is much improved, but I still have six more therapy sessions after tomorrow morning's. Even then, it will probably be close to the end of this year before I am back to my "new normal:" due to the type of replacement (reverse), I will probably not regain my original range of motion, and I'll be happy when I can safely pick up a case of water (~20kgs).

I do need to publish my "Things to Do After Shoulder is Fixed, Healed & Back to "New Normal" list: I'll have it documented (it continues to grow), just need to format it so I can cut & paste in a thread).

Charlie

Since there is light at the end of the tunnel (6 more therapy visits after tomorrow, but still a long way to be back to where I was last September!), I figured it was time to present my list:

Like this for more easily taking photos of parts/tooling/etc., but not:

UniStrut base & shirt section of strut, focusing rail that I bought ?? years ago, decent iPhone clamp and the Kant-Twist clamp with large pads from a previous post (base will be clamped to whatever convenient work surface). Total outlay <US$50.

UPDATE (Not Great News, But Not Catastrophic)

Messaged my Surgeon yesterday asking about building up to lifting 40kgs (case of water at Costco), and this was the response from his staff:

"Presently, you should be following the reverse protocol which allows for 5lbs both arms. At 6 months from surgery you should be lifting 10-15lbs. At a year, we allow for 30 lbs routinely and 50lbs on occasions."

So it looks like most Shop activities will be pushed out to near the end of this year :(

I will be discussing this with my Surgeon during my next follow up (mid-May), as this was not noted in the protocol document I received the end of December, nor does it align with some discussions I had with his team previously. However, I'm not risking anything, so will abide by the "ruling."

Well, I Better Be Extra Careful From Now On . . .

I used up all of my luck for the rest of the year!

Bought a No-Name 0.011" – 0.060" Pin Gage Set off Amazon. Arrived quickly, but the box (and packaging) were covered in oil. Reached out to the Seller, who quickly responded with an apology saying that there was only supposed to be a light coating of oil on the pins themselves and that they would send a replacement, so I did a return & replace with Amazon. Got the replacement and it was just the same, down to the oil that worked its way under part of the label:

20250325 LLDSIMEX Set PIN-M0-50 Top rfs.jpeg

Back to the Seller telling them there wasn't any sense in sending another one that while only the pins may have been coated, the oil got everywhere during shipping & storage. They agreed and we worked out a compromise.

Today I wiped the outside of the box down with Isopropyl Alcohol and then carefully wiped out the inside, includig between the pins with a Q-Tip. However, I must not have been careful enough, because afterwards the 0.011" pin was missing. Searched the bench top, Q-Tip, paper towel – nothing. So out of desperation I reached for one of my retractable magnets-on-a-stick, and lightly swept it across the floor: Eureka!

20250326 Dumb Luck rfs.jpeg

To (hopefully) avoid a future issue, I added flags to the smallest two pins:

20250326 Dumb Proof rfs.jpeg

When I'm feeling ambitious, I think I'll dip one end of ech pin in my can of Plasti-Dip (if I can find it!). However, it will be a long process as I would only want to do one at a time.

Hey, don’t over do it !!
Recovery is a slow process.
Build stability and strength slowly.

As we age, the recovery process should be slower to avoid further damage.
Easy does it . . . Progress is better over a period of time.

Slow & steady is the way to go, regardless of age (but even more so for us more mature individuals).

Updated After Shoulder To-Do List

Met with my Surgeon and he is very pleased with my progress (at one point I was demonstrating the Pectoral Fly that I wanted to start doing again now that he said it was OK to go back at the Fitness Center and he asked me to show him again: "you're actually getting better range of motion with your operable arm [the technical term for the arm he operated on; when I first heard this term I was confused since that was the arm that didn't operate at all]!"). I will have a final visit with him in late November just to make sure things are still going well.

I am released to gradually getting back in the shop, just need to slowly build up lifting/pushing/pulling and not ever going above 25 lbs. per arm (darn, no pull-ups), no lifting away from my body and taking it slow.

Thanks to everyone for all of the support the last eight months,

Charlie
Quite the list of projects Charlie (pretending to be like @David ?). Not sure it was smart to post that list. Now you'll have @Susquatch on your tail for doing way too much and thinking of ways to sabotage you.

Charlie,
I have I-Gaging EZ View DROs on my 3/4hp Mini Mill.
What have you found to be the most common cause of JUMPING on the displays ?
(Dirt, Sensors, Wiring static . . .)

I haven’t really noticed any jumping, but if you move an axis fast it does take some time (fractions of a second, it’s just not instantaneous) for the display to catch up; IIRC, this is due to the refresh rate and/or resolution of the scale/pickup vs. that of the software.

W.r.t. #3 - don't buy Samsung - just know too many people with issues (me included) that make them candidates for recycling after the warranty expires.

Not to worry: got a Whirlpool to match the dryer we got 2 years ago to replace the GE dryer (rear bearing went out a 2nd time).

Have a soft spot for Whirlpool since my FIL spent his career selling them (working his way up to regional sales director, selling freezers to Alaskans [and Hawaiians]); only got the GE set because my SIL got them at cost.
