Welcome to Westwood Metalworks, What is he building in there?

Made some room in the barn this morning by getting rid of my old buzzbox I never use anymore. Been working with an Ironworker the past couple weeks, and he was talking about trying to find a welder for his shop to do stuff at home.....well have I got a deal for you buddy....Free95. Tossed it in my car today, tossed it in his at lunch (if anybody has ever lifted one, you know there was no tossing involved😀 ). He was happy, I was happy, and another tool/machine gets back in circulation and used, and I didn't have to deal with kijiji or marketplace trying to sell it.

I had a friend that wanted it earlier this year, but he bailed on it. Still works great and a capable machine. Nobody wants old stuff anymore though....

I've never bit my tongue harder than when I found out the son who got the 69 Chevelle took the carb off for an EFI kit. This was a car that was a Malibu shell, that I helped build for a few years. It's a funny story that I own the hood hinges on that car but anyway that's between me and the original owner.

It's not THAT hard to use a carb. The reason I bit my tongue was I'd rather see the car still get driven. But yes I agree the old stuff is getting forgotten faster and faster

Nice local marketplace deal this morning. 10' of w8x31, a 6x24" cylinder and a 2.5"x24" (maybe 3") one he tossed in for free. $150, and it was just down the road. The big cyl was just rebuilt before it held his garage floor down for 10-15 years.

The H beam will become the backbone of a tire hammer, and the cylinder a forging press (already have the steel for that). Not sure which one ill use yet, but leaning towards the smaller as i actually have a pump suitable for it, and its the path of least resistance. The 6" is too big ( and would be way too slow) for now, but perhaps a future upgrade. Some winter projects there anyway.....

Now that the belt grinder project is about 80% done it's time to start a few more new ones.....lol

After I cut the grass for hopefully the last time this year I went and unloaded my spoils. I measured that blue cylinder and it's actually 3.5x16", so it's the perfect size for a forging press based on my materials and pump which is just my current log splitter I'll be adding quick connects to. It has a 3.5" cylinder now, and I'm fine with the speed and tonnage for my needs.

I then brought out my little inverter stick welder and welded a 2" receiver onto my sawmill frame to more easily move it around.

I didn't weld it fully, just enough to hold for now and I'll cut it off and put a more proper tongue on it later when i get back to that build...... Still pretty impressed with that little machine for the price. It runs 3/32 7018 pretty nice.

I'm procrastinating doing some other projects this morning, so I decided to start a new one while watching the MotoGP race...

A chopped hood for my new autodark lens. It's a 110x90 lens, and I styled the helmet after a Fibre Metal pipeliner. I'm currently printing the purple lens holder for trial fits. It will be a cast Aluminum part eventually and riveted to the hood which I'll make from sheet aluminum with some bead rolling. Leather shields will cover the gaps at the bottom and top to my hard hat. Still need to design the controls pod. I want to test the lens fit and retention idea before working on that. I will be machining my own quick loc hardware too.

As shown above it should weigh about 495g (with lens). A stock pipeliner weighs 593. The stock PA trublue helmet (with lens) is 490, and the lens itself is about 105. The leather will add some, and so will the controls pod, but it shouldn't be too bad. As long as it's lighter than the pipeliner.....

No idea when this will be done either. Maybe tomorrow, maybe 3 years from now.....You guys should know me by now lol.

The difference is <4oz. Is that really noticeable?
Hang it off your head all day long and it is. The goal of making my own is not so much chopping weight, but more about size. Plus I like making cool stuff. Weight savings is certainly something to keep in mind though. My old pipeliner is heavy. A plastic shield is much lighter and it's very noticeable when using. Hoping this is somewhere in between when it all shakes out.

Slow down gents you're putting a lot of pressure on me. I've only just finished swapping the exhaust on the Audi this morning, still have lots to do! 😀

Must be that west coast time thing. You guys get a couple extra hours at the end of the day......😉
Whoever drew the time zone lines must've been drunk. AB to SK back an hour (winter or DST). SK to Montana changes again. Then as you keep going south it's either CO or Texas and it changes again. Without going much more than 100 miles east/west 🙄
