Weiss VM32 CNC Conversion

A USB stick from Tormach US$28.95, also obtainable from https://www.studica.ca/en/ in Canada.
A 7i92T from Mesa
A 3 or 4 axis BOB with stepper drivers.
An SFF HP desktop, with a single ethernet interface, and a USB wifi adapter to get to internet.
A touch screen monitor, I bought this one in 2021 https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B083WF327D but you can now use a larger one turned vertical. Check on Tormach site for size. Should be resistive touch to avoid spurious actions.
The usual buttons for Reset, Feed Hold, etc although those can also be done from the screen of course.
One file needs 3-5 lines edited to set leadscrew details and travel/limits.
They have an excellent manual for download.

My shop made machine is an 1100-3 in Tormach's config. But with high speed spindle. The conversational doesn't know about that so I have to manual edit the S line to get up to what I want the spindle to run at.

This one?

A couple of years ago I bought a 10" 1280x800 touch screen. I found the 800 too small for LinuxCNC It works but just... 1280x1024 seems like it would be better but maybe still a bit small?

I like the psng touch probe system I have on my LinuxCNC system. Although I've screwed something up and still don't have the updates working properly what I'm hopefully able to do is insert a TTS tool and have it automatically measure length if there is no length in the tool table or if there is a length just change the current workspace co-ordinates so the tip of that tool is now at Z=0.

Does Tormach have anything like this sort of tool sensor window?
 
Managed to get my 3D probe and tool offsets figured out last night after some head scratching.
I believe the Masso documentation contains an error or at the very least is not clear on setting up a 3D probe when using a tool setter.

Specifically, Step 10 where it says the -ve (meaning negative) of the value shown in the Z axis DRO is the number
My machine is setup with the generally accepted cartesian coordinates, where Z0 is the top of the Z axis and movement toward the table is Z negative.

Long story made somewhat short, Tool 1 Z offset in my tool table is -314.74697.
The machine measured 3D probe offset is -299.361 which makes sense because the probe is longer than Tool 1 by 15.385mm, the actual difference between the two tools when I measure them on my surface plate with a digital height gauge.
Literal reading of the documentation says that you're to put the negative value of the Z axis DRO number. My dim memory of high school math said a negative of a negative number is positive but that made zero sense so I stuck the -299.xxx number in the offset for the probe.
Proceeded to probe X, Y and Z of a 1-2-3 block in the vise, then loaded three different tools into the machine, ran them all to Z0 and they landed precisely on top of the 1-2-3 block.
Job done!

I have. In fact, on my first colonoscopy they never planned to put me to sleep. That will NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN! On another occasion I was getting a scope up the liquid plumbing system and I didn't even get to sleep cuz the tube for the anesthesia was kinked. That's another story......

Back in the early 80s my dad had his first colonoscopy.
He called it a bastardizing assholeoscopy.
He was 100% sure they went in there with a 2 by 4 and a trouble light.
I slept through my first one 10 years ago.
Fentanyl is a hell of a drug.

Yes that would be very bad.
Fortunately Masso has canned probing cycles where you define the travel distance and probing speed.
In my case I have the max distance to travel set to 10 mm and the probing speed is 60 mm/min.

So what happens step by step when you want to change a tool?
Say the first is a TTS 6mm end mill that in the holder is 70mm long in total to the cutting edges.
Then after that you want to drill a hole with a 4mm drill bit you just put into the TTS 1/4" chuck.

Does your system go out to the tool setter and measure each first? Or does your system use the length of the 6mm end mill from the tool table and go direct to milling and only use the tool setter for measuring the drill bit? Or do you have to measure the drill bit + chuck before you start the project?

What if you have two drill bits; the 4mm and a 10mm?
 
I've set it up to measure every tool every tool change. Once I build out my physical tool library I may change it to only measure when requested. The downside to setting it to measure when requested is that to measure requires going to a different screen, checking boxes etc so is real workflow detour.
Right now, I have the following
Tool 1 = 3/8, 4F endmill
Tool 2 = 3/8 centre drill (because I cannot find the 1/4" spotting drill I bought :( )
Tool 3 = 1/4" HSS drill
Tool 99 = 3D probe

So to make the T-nuts, Tool 1 does the facing op, the 2D adaptive clearing to make the shoulder, and the 2D contour finishing pass. No tool change for those three ops.
Then the T2 M6 command will bring the head to over the tool setter (X0, Y77.XX) and up some safe distance, I think it's -100mm or 100 mm down from Z0
I change to Tool 2, hit cycle start and the tool is measured, then it carries on with the op.

If I have two drills I could swap them out in the TTS holder because they will be measured with every tool change.

Glad it's working for you with only the cost of two end mills. I've attached the document that describes the changes to the M6 tool change operation. The description in the doc here:

Workflow
Start the machine and home all.

Touch off work piece X,Y,Z, using the 3D probe. See note below.

Load the G-Code file.

Cycle start

At each tool change the user is prompted to load the tool and indicate when the tool change is complete.

If the tool is a fixed length tool indicated by the presence of a Z value other than zero in the tool table machining will proceed using the offset from the tool table.

If the tool is variable length, the tool will move to the tool setter location and will probe the sensor to determine the tool’s length and then machining will proceed.

Note: When the work piece is probed in the Z direction with the 3D probe, the value of the touch-off minus the length of the probe is stored in parameters #4001-4008 for G54-G59.2 respectivly. This measurement would be as if the spindle nose is sitting on the work piece. The length of the probe is stored in the .ini file.

What's not clear to me and I still can't figure it out from the code what the value of the touch-off is. Machine Co-ordinates? The previous G54.Z - New TouchOff?

That's why I've been trying to figure out just how this all works.

Edit: Found this interesting description too. Pity there isn't something this detailed for my implementation.

Tool Setter Basic ReMap for M6 NOT using Probe Screen

This is a basic configuration for remapping your M6 command in LinuxCNC to touch off your tool at a tool setter after every manual tool change to account for the change in tool length, and adjust the Z height as required.

Aside from the "bait and switch" vibe that this has, the Masso record of software releases is less than annual. So if one was to ante up the subscription fee and there were no updates, they would have basically paid for something and never received the goods.
The first three items, the app, realtime job tracking and G-code messaging from all accounts I've read are pretty much never used because no one leaves their machines unattended while running.
 
that's a nasty surprise. Although per the forum it appears they don't fix bugs or release updates so being stuck with what you have now won't be a bad thing.
