Solid Toolpost Turret

Interesting that you've gone back, but I can see your reasoning. As with most things in this trade, there is no one size fits all solution to anything. Just a collection of compromises that best fit the situation at hand.

So, I've used the solid toolpost plinth for over a year now successfully, albeit with some hiccups as mentioned above, and I'm glad I tried it. I can still re-install it whenever I think there's a need.

I still have a plinth in my future. Especially for parting. But even that might die if I can develop a better parting tool holder.

Any plinth I do will not require removing the compound, or it won't happen. That said, I have some ideas to improve how easy it is to remove and install the compound.

Right now my priority is to install the 3ph motor and then a DRO.

I enjoy reading your posts. So much to learn and consider. Keep them coming!

?? How does that work?
I am thinking of mounting it at the back of the cross-slide instead of the front.

It's either that or make it a custom toolpost.

The parting tool holder is gunna sit in my Aloris tool post but be dimensioned to sit on the compound and center to the spindle for extra rigidity.

Ahh. Got it. The rear mount would probably easier.

Swapped out my solid toolpost for the factory compound yesterday, for the first time in probably 6 or 7 years, maybe longer. Needed to cut a taper. Much rougher cut, unless I snug up the compound gibs to the point it takes two men and a goat to turn the compound handwheel. Could be the compound needs some work, but that effort is so far down the list of priorities it’ll probably never happen. Once the taper was cut the solid toolpost was returned to service.

What size and make lathe do you have?

Busy Bee B2227 10”x18”. I installed one of @jcdammeyer ‘s ELS last year and I love it, but I didn’t install the z-axis drive. Might move that up in the project list so I can cut tapers with a solid toolpost.
I need to move that project up the list for my South Bend too but since I have a taper attachment on the SB it's never been as much of an issue. I've even set the ELS to drive a turning speed and then engaged the carriage lever to do power cross feed for facing. But having the full ELS operation on the SB would be nice. So many projects but only 42 centuries to do them all. Never enough time.
