Then drop it. Move the hoist and repeat. In this way moving a 1Ton boulder 100' would only require about 30 iterations and cost nothing.

Another trick is to make a sled out of plywood, put the rock on the plywood and pull the plywood with a truck like a sled. A heavy rope through holes at one end going up through holes in the plywood with knots on the top works well. On my home farm in Saskatchewan, it was called a steinschleppe (stone boat in English) and was pulled with draft horses. The boat was just timber framing back then because we had no plywood. They use plywood and a tractor today. You can even put 3 or 4 fence posts under the plywood to roll it on - just like moving a heavy machine on concrete.
