RF30 Mill/Drill Surprises

The last time I had to adjust the head on my "30" I realized how old & weak Im getting....almost powered me out to crank the damn thing so that wheel looks like just the ticket.
I started going thru my memory bank trying to remember who in the neighborhood would have an old Massey combine with the "header lift wheel" still on it...'but came up empty( memory is another "old man" affliction) so i came up with the idea that a trip to a local transport truck wrecker for an old steering wheel that might give me a big enough radius to ease the cranking effort.

To add to that...find yourself a steering wheel spinner knob...

Step 1 reassembled, mounted to the floor, cleaned and lubed. Step 2 deciding on how to set up the 220v 1-1/2 hp 3 phase motor or just run the 3/4 hp 110v motor for now. I definitely will be going with a VFD later but have to figure out between 110v or 220v source input. Cost vs Best choice??

You can get a 110v 1ph to 220v 3ph inverter. I have one on my lathe. If you watch amazon they come up really cheap. If you want better Schneider has a set and they are around $150+. Best choice is a decent vfd and 220v 1ph to 220v 3ph. To give my 2 cents, I would put the original motor back on so you can continue with your projects. Save up some money and buy a decent vfd and do the change over when you have every thing ready to go. Teco is a good name vfd, Schneider has a couple decent brands. For higher level abb or weg, but the price is dramatically different. I went with the amazon vfd because my lathe came with 3ph and I had no other option. And I guess to be honest I'm cheap.

Thanks for the input. Forsure a good idea to wait and get a better vfd but I probably will shop Amazon and get a cheaper one. The 110v models are much rarer from what I see. What brand did you purchase? I probably will need a 2 hp version as my mill is 1-1/2 hp.

Unfortunately a 110v --> 220V VFD will max out at 1HP capacity.

I used the cheapest 220>208 VFD I could find on Amazon, but spent a bit extra to get a Baldor 2HP VFD-rated motor. Even then, the total was under $250 including a new pulley. I figure if the VFD craps out, I can buy a better one and getting started with the dinged=up RF30 I didn't want to spend a pile of money to find out the mill itself wasn't worth the effort..

Just looking on Amazon, man have the prices for vfds gone up. My last one was 60 bucks. These prices are near dealer prices on much better vfds.
