New to me Ammco 7" Metal shaper

My terminology is probably AFU.

I'm referring to the screw that moves the clapper up and down. Gravity tends to drop it down the wrong end of the freeplay. But as long as it isn't touching anything, it seems to work. The plunge indicator bearing on the vise doesn't lie.
On mine that can be adjusted out with any nut/jamnut under the dial. Or at least, that, is if we're both on the same page...... And I think my pages are soggy and stuck together today........ So, I may not get to the right page. :rolleyes: :p

I'm about ready to kill the lights, so foggy is the least of my problems.

I don't know if mine has a backlash adjustment or not. Even if it does, it prolly can't adjust out the tiny bit I need to get rid of.

Once I reamed out my little NOGA Clone indicator holder to take a regular indicator, the problem was gone. I can adjust it by half a thou if I want now.

No, I'm not putting a DRO on it....... LOL!

As you explore the world of shapers, I'm learning what modifications to my project shaper I should add.

OK, so I think I have the same jam nut arrangement. Here is a photo.

These nuts totally eliminate all backlash on the screw as evidenced by the dial indicator I mounted between the clapper box and the vise.

The lead nut itself is located behind the clapper box and is not visible without disassembly. With the lock loose, I can lift the box about 10 thou. Gravity will always drop it to the lower limit. I cannot push it further down. However, there is about 2 thou of settling (almost like a viscous damper) at either end that takes a, second or two to settle out. Once settled, it will not move any further. I don't know what the damping is. Probably an oil film in the leadscrew nut. I believe that the 10 thou is all in the nut to screw backlash. At this time, I have no plans to fix it. I think it's better to learn to live with it.

Here is a photo of using the shear tool on aluminium. The feed rate is 1 click, but the depth of cut is too much as evidenced by the size of the chips. Nonetheless, it's a gorgeous mirror finish. You can see the reflection of the chips on the surface.
