Here is a full review of my findings
Power
- Dymo 5200 didn't come with a 120v adapter or a rechargeable battery. Instead it takes 6 AA Alkaline Batteries. A set of brand new batteries didn't last more than a half dozen labels before showing low battery. Note, this could be the low temp in my barn this time of year.
- P Touch Cube has a rechargeable LiIon battery that is still going after several dozen labels. It uses a USB micro charge port. No idea why not USB-C. Dumb but it works.
Label Size
- dymo is 1/4 to 3/4. Prints on many different styles. Handles Heat Shrink.
- PTouch is 1/4 to 1". Prints on many styles including heat shrink.
Fonts
- Dymo likes large fonts and resolution is lousy with its smallest fonts
- PTouch fonts can be set directly in points as low as 5 point which looks just fine even though it is very small
Lines of text
- Both can be set for multiple lines.
Graphics
- Dymo does not print graphics.
- PTouch will print graphics.
Speed
- Comparable
Tape Wasting
- Dymo does not waste tape even for one offs.
- PTouch wastes 1" of tape for each label printed. However, this waste can be eliminated for subsequent labels by printing continuous labels and cutting manually.
Tape Cutting
- Dymo has a built in manual label slicer.
- PTouch has an internal automatic slicer.
Summary
The lack of a power cord and low battery life on the Dymo 5200 is a major flaw. But it is a totally stand alone labeller that does not require a smart phone or a computer. It is also fast and quiet. The max label size is only 3/4, but it will print multiple lines and handles heat shrink labels for wiring. The two smallest font sizes are poor resolution. It does not handle graphics, outlines, or borders. I would happily recommend it for basic stand alone labelling as long as the low battery life doesn't bother you.
The Brother P-Touch PT-P710BT is a very powerful labeller but it has no keyboard so it does need to be paired with a smart phone, tablet, or PC. It handles a very wide range of highly readable fonts and does borders, outlines, and graphics. It also handles full 1" labels including Heat Shrink. It's only flaw is a bit of label waste that can be minimized by printing consecutive labels. I happily recommend it as a premium quality Labeller.
No matter which label printer you have, GET SOME WHITE ON BLACK LABELS - VERY VERY CLASSY!
