JCDammeyer's 42 projects

Hey guys,
We are currently crossing the Alps and doing the cliff walks of Switzerland.
Nice but expensive. The Swiss are very welcoming of Canadians and are aware of our pains.
Great landscapes and scenery. (Lucerne, Lauderbrun, Grindewal, Sherkhorn)
Next we go to Zermatt !!

I'm building a small bench. Haven't used the jointer and planer for a while so it's been fun so far. With 2x4's running $4.02 at Rona it's the material of choice. I'll use wood preservative and then dark stain but for now the top is done. Mortise and Tenons for the two legs.

Also discovered I shouldn't cross cut 3.25" thick material with a 10" blade with 80 teeth. Lots of blue smoke and burning wood. Switched to 1.75" deep and flipped it and then just belt sanded the ends to remove the slight edge.

Dimensions are 33.5 x 14 x 3.25 inches. Was going to make it 32" wide and just trim off the planer snipe bit but as it turned out I had so little that I just belt sanded that area.

Ever have one of those days? Since I have to wait at least 6 hours for the epoxy to cure I thought "Hey, the table saw is clean except for the glue up. I'll clean out the paint supplies shelf."

Yikes:

Likely most of these can go in the trash.

And this is what came off the shelf.

And a bunch of other crap that has already been rehoused. In some ways I think I preferred being ignorant to what I had there. I mean who has that many paint stirring sticks?

Here is a couple more photos to ‘soak up’.
We made it up to the Observation Station on Gornergrat.

A mountain that reaches 4100 metres, about 3 kms to the East of Matterhorn.

Glue has cured. Surface planed and ends squared and then cut into two pieces for the bench supports.

Next step is the mortises and tenons to attach the legs.

Tenons cut. Rectangular openings chiselled after using a forstner bit to cut most of the wood away. Man that was hard work. Soft wood does not chisel well across end grain.

Anyway, WEST Epoxy with filler. The epoxy is really old. The 205 hardener oxidized to an almost brown colour. I was going to use the 206 slow hardener but it's kind of purple plus I don't have a pump for it. Given that I've already used the 25 hardener for the lamination and other projects I just have to wait 6 to 12 hours for it to completely cure.

Why not cut the tenons into the legs? Turns out they were too short to add a 2" tenon.

How did you make the square mortises?
I was going to use the 1/2" mortising unit as suggested by Google AI as two staggered rows of 1/2" to make the 1". However when I did a test hole in the soft spruce I found the control was just not there. Too much vibration and the soft chips kept jamming up the chisel around the drill bit.

So instead I went with the 1" Forstner drill bit.

Discussions then went along the line of using a 1/2" router rounding bit to make the tenon edges curved. However once I started making square holes I initially was having fun so I kept at it. But then late last night my hand cramped up and I had to stop. By then it was to late to switch over.
