JCDammeyer's 42 projects

Wow, that sure looks like useless garbage. Doesn't matter how cheap stuff gets, there's always someone coming up with a cheaper and worse product. I must have sold hundreds of thousands of dollars of polybutylene pipe before it was banned. Orangeburg looks even worse than PolyB.
You think you are surprised. Imagine the feeling when your shovel scrapes across the pipe opening up a long oval hole. And then are able to pull out flat pieces from the delamination. I must admit I'm tending towards replacing as much of that pipe as I can.

Yeah, the wiki article mentions a 50 year life - good chance you are past it and its just a matter of time before another section fails. Unfortunately its probably time to start getting quotes

If I remember correctly from earlier. You were septic and have since been hooked to municipal. If correct from the old tank to the street will be newer pvc (most likely) pipe. You should only have to replace the line between the house and the old tank...... hopefully the pipe coming out of the foundation is a little more robust.......

Yup. The first cleanout is already white PVC. That's how we were able to measure from there to the non-round pipe. Record measurement at white pipe. Pull camera back until damage point. Subtract that from first reading. Came out to about 2.5m. The house has cast iron. We can also see that transition with the camera. But how far does that extend out of the house if at all? Do I want to take out the front entrance concrete pad?

If I pull out the big planter I can dig down on both sides of the perimeter drain and go underneath. Then run a new piece from there to the cleanout. Looking more like that is the best solution.

You'll sleep better knowing what's been done. Could you carry the PVC into the house and do the transition there?

"It is made from layers of ground wood pulp fibers and asbestos fibres compressed with and bound by a water resistant adhesive then impregnated with liquefied coal tar pitch."
Who thought that was a good idea????
The brother of the guy who thought lead pipe was fine.
There is still lead pipe in use in parts of Regina as well as some wooden mains.
Progress is slow and expensive. like most politicians.

Under the sawhorse the trench is visible giving and idea of the pipe path. The planter is there. Then the concrete pad and finally the door and inside cement floor covered in parquet tile.

So short answer is yes. The transition could be done inside the house.

Ah, the good old days. When a customer could come to the sales counter and buy 12ft of 1/8"x12" lead sheet, a 50 lb bag of asbestos, 2 quarts of xylene, and a quart of concentrated sulphuric acid and nobody thought anything of it. And everyone was smoking. All our cars ran on leaded gas. Radium dials on our watches. Not that long ago - late 70s, early 80s we were oblivious to all health risks. But we didn't have to put "Do Not Injest" labels on bleach bottles.

I fully expect to be diagnosed with something deadly as I used TriClorethane to clean IBM typwriters. Worked without masks for all sorts of stuff. Still have Asbestos material.
Of course my brain is slightly dead so maybe that's the compensation.

I will need two since the hole is longer than one of these.

No. Those are just couplings that seal the joint. You still need a pipe of some kind between them.

Then there's still the pipe seeking post that @DavidR8 gave me. The dirt line on it was at the depth of this pipe and it looks like it's right in line. But the other drain pipes are in the way.
I guess I could gamble that that part isn't damaged.
Or replace the entire length up to the inspection point which is white PVC installed when the septic tank was decommissioned.

If it were me, I'd replace the whole thing with the proper pipe.
So take out the concrete block planter which is actually falling apart and pretty ugly and at the same time replace the entire length of 58 year old pipe.

Yup! You will sleep better at night if you do that. Just don't try any rumba dancing in the wet trench!

I pick leaded gas as the biggest problem in that lot. It lowered the IQ of the world.

Wouldn't he still need 2? One at each end of the joint with the new piece in the middle?

Yes, that's exactly what I meant. I have too much hair that gets in the way of writing properly sometimes.

A slight re-write so I don't sound quite so stupid:

No, that's not how it works. The ones he posted are just couplings that seal the joints. In addition to the two couplings, you still need a pipe of some kind between them.

OK. Enough of the sh_t stuff.
Time to talk about a different sh_tty subject.

I haven't figured out how to do a screen save yet, if it's even possible so I used my phone camera.
What are we looking at?
1. The rev 0.1 layout of the PIC32 upgrade for my ELS drawing with Protel 99SE. Not even Service Pack 6.
2. I copied the CD ROM into a PROTEL99SE folder on my Linux Mint system.
3. As I finally got WinBoat running an install of WIN-10 PRO I thought I'd try installing older software that ran originally on WIN-XP.
4. Once running I loaded this project I'd also copied over to the Linux File System which is one folder in the WIN-10 file system.
5. It's a bit slow and pokey but it does work although I don't think usable.

Just thought I'd share.
