Gift for myself. LF common wisdom

I cannot be absolutely free of any obligations and make my completely personal/unapproved decisions for that amount . I am not living in the vacuum and my best half is the same.
BTW - I made my short list but still not final choice: midsize CNC mill or good watch.
Go for the mill! Watches are nice but you can't do much with them (I say this and I make watches :p) besides Rolex is way over rated, I've yet to understand how a company that produces more than 1 million watches per year can charge the prices they do.....good marketing I guess. If it must go to a watch at least look at a micro brand like a Direnzo or a mainstream brand like Oris....both brands within your price range. Good luck and show us what you bought!

Interestingly enough - I started to check stores for Rolex and realized it is UNOBTANIUM. Waiting list for 1+ year without guarantee !!!??? . You need to by some stuff for 2K even before they will put you on that list. Crazy!. Two weeks ago I was in duty free in Paris CDG and they have display only Rolexes. What a mess.

Ya the jewelry stores are just piling on with that type of marketing, I'm surprised it's only 2K you need to spend to get listed.

I say buy a Rolex clone for $100 and use the leftovers for the new mill;-)

I figure a Rolex is just like getting a new credit card.

I said earlier in this post you can’t just go to a Rolex Ad plop your card down and buy any Rolex you want. A lot of people don’t understand the process of Rolex. Go ask for a Daytona lol…. 10 plus year wait if you’re a nobody and you will never see it. A Daytona will minimum double in value the second you walk out the door.

Not all Rolex dealers make you spend money. I didn’t. I know for a fact the Ottawa dealer (Howard’s I believe) does this. I bought my sub in 2020, during Covid at the peak of demand and had it in 2 months. Very unique situation and I got lucky. Got my wife’s a few months later but women’s Rolex are way easier to get.

What is this a watch forum? Come on guys, what would folks recommend for a mill?
:P
LOL.....agreed! Like I posted earlier....BUY the mill! :p

What is this a watch forum?
Surely not. I am following one CNC mill on FB - it has its pros and cons and I am still undecided. Would be thankful for any input on these:

Chip, but big for my shop and for my needs. And old.

What is this a watch forum?

Surely not.

Personal Opinion

To the extent that watches require metal working in their construction and repair, yes it is.

We are not a watch collectors and watch hobbiest forum, but we ARE a metal workers forum. So there is some overlap.

Working on small parts is an area of interest to many of us, not just those who focus on watches. Helping each other is a good thing regardless of our own special interests.

And I guess I'm the only one who follows Chris (Clickspring)?

Ok. Here is an interesting little side trip.

I asked AI to tell me all about Clickspring. It told me about a marketing company that does great CAD and great marketing videos.

So I said no, I want to know about a different outfit that works with watches. It said that the marketing outfit frequently deals with watches but watches are not their main focus.

So I asked about youtube channels that do watches. It said that's the same marketing company and provided two photos.

So now I ask myself, what does AI know that we don't know? Perhaps I could also ask what do we know that AI doesn't know. But I think the former is more relevant.

It certainly does seem that the very professional content for Clickspring on YouTube points to a much more sophisticated creator than the average YouTube artist.

This coming from a guy who generally hates YouTube.

I’m jealous of his skill and patience, and amazed at what he can do with a Sherline lathe (he does have other machines, too).

Who else makes their own files, then used them to make a part?

I thought Chris was short for Christopher, who would have thought Chris looked this. Maybe the accent made her sound male.

The video where he and Tony travel to Greece via the Boxford and fiddle with the Antikythera machine is one of the best on all of YT.
