Gift for myself. LF common wisdom

The question is what did it cost Clickspring to be at the top of the AI list.
Marketing (and many other) companies have quality website providers that include a long list of potential search terms in their metadata so they rise to the top of searches (and they can also pay search engine providers a “sponsoring fee”).

Cost of entry: one Antikythera machine.

Can you imagine! We believe that the ancient Greeks made that shoe box sized mechanism to simulate the astrological movement of the sun, moon, and planets, as well as key events in society. Yet, we don't think they knew that the earth orbited the sun or understood prime numbers or had lathes and milling machines. Clearly, the knowledge disappeared or was deliberately suppressed.

Amazing really. Here is one man's version of what it might have looked like.

Apparently it was hand cranked as it had no power storage system that we know of.

Your job forever was to crank the machine.

Hey, you two guys in the corner oggling the food! From now on, your job is to take turns cranking this machine for the rest of your life!

All that mechanical stuff but what I find amazing is the astronomical knowledge behind it. Predicting events that occur only once every six hundred years, multi generational wisdom.

Yes, and long before man generally knew the earth was round and orbitted the sun!

If you are looking for the “gateway drug” grab a Taig Lathe from Lee Valley Tools, some pen turning kits and a few good Sorby turning tools. You’ll spend less than 2K, be fully kitted out, be able to recover 60% (or more) of your investment. Turn a few pens and see if doing so “floats your boat”. There is lots of available instruction on YouTube and you can in a day have something to hold that you made. If doing so doesn’t light a fire in you, turn around and exit the rabbit hole. My caution to you is that this is the route I started with and you would be shocked at how deep the rabbit hole goes….. especially if you migrate to metal turning……. Only you are going to be able to decide what is best for you. Always keep in mind that opinions are like assholes; everyone’s got one. Good luck!
