BaitMaster’s (Work) Bench

Anybody have any (relatively) inexpensive tool holders like these they want to get rid of? Apparently they fit something called an "Italian-style" QCTP. I think they're the BR-BP size. Trying to find a few more for this damnable SM1230 lathe I just bought from @BaitMaster...

So you are the lucky guy eh! I have been wondering who got it. There is a silver lining to all your find posts after all!

Congrats!

I have seen those tool holders on Ali, but I didn't mark them. I'll have to look for you. They are nice enough that I wouldn't run out and replace them with BXA if I were you.

I’ve been trying to tell @JustaDB that toolpost is a beast. Super rigid. It works great with that lathe.

They are a nice toolpost. Hard to find holders for though…. No complaints on the rigidity however.

The bxa is certainly more common and seems to work well as well. But that Italian toolpost on the utilathe is SOLID, and not cheap feeling at all.

As far as news on my lathe, I got it running tonight under power after changing the belt and adding oil after DB left.

So making headway for sure.

Can you post some better photos? After looking at that one, I'm thinking they might be Dixon compatible. Some measurements might help too. If so, it might be easier to find them. But prolly not cheap.

Here you go susq. No measurements for now though.

I would say I’m glad the utilathe is going to a good home, but I don’t know if he’s told his old lady about it yet or not…..

I’m sure he will enjoy it. It’s a good machine.

Mine came with me to get my new lathe so don’t any of you say the pot and the kettle are both black!

@Susquatch is right I think. Dickson looks almost the same.

Yes, with those photos I'm pretty sure they are. @Dabbler is in your neck of the woods and may be able to help with model and size identification, proper setup and usage, and probably sourcing too!

He was explaining some of the rigidity and indexing features to me a while back. I'm not sure his are the same size though. You guys should try circling back to him on this subject. He will be infinitely more familiar with them than I am.

They say with a lathe & a welder you can build anything, so he should be able to figure out a doghouse to sleep in for a few nights...

If @BaitMaster gets you kicked out, I even have plans for a nice doghouse for you @JustaDB! It was built with that idea in mind!

The shed is insulated with flip doors for the dogs to enter into three cozy insulated dog boxes on the inside. The boxes have an extra long twin bed sized top for the outcast to sleep on when SWMBO doesn't want him in the house. And there is electricity, lights, and wifi in there too!

The side pen you see is a small whelping pen. The main two outside pens on the back side are 8x8 with a roof.

Very cozy @JustaDB. Susquatch tested!

An interesting part of the manual is liang dei’s…
The same manual came with my PM-1224T lathe. You might want to download Precision Matthews manual for the PM-1236T, it has some additional information over the Liang Dei one.

(My PM-1224T was a special order with a 24” bed. The 36” bed would have been lovely but would have also taken up precious workshop space. So far I haven’t regretted the 24” bed…)

They seem like capable machines for the size, and made to a good standard of precision and quality.

A 12x24 in this configuration would be a nice machine I can imagine. I specifically wanted at least the 36” bed, or a 40”, as space is not as much of a consideration for me.

I’m impressed with the precision of these lathes. The numbers in the manual, if true, are dang impressive. And backed by my real world inspection of my lathe in a slightly used condition.

My new to me lathe, measured backlash is about 3 thou on the compound and cross slide… 5 on the carriage hand wheel. The tailstock about the same as the compound/cross.

I get about 2/10ths runout on the rear of the exterior spindle, which might just be the surface finish.

No detectable runout on the spindle nose or taper….none. Wow.

I’m sure yours is the same.

A tale of two belts….
Apparently our lathes require two belts to comfortably switch between the low speed and high speed pulley (According to posts on the hobby machinist forum):
Gates Tri-Power BX-24 and BX-25
I’m still running on the original belt though.

Precision Matthew’s absolute facepalm.

Cut the crap, jack.

This guy is trying to suggest Liang Dei isn’t the OEM for them on their Taiwanese lathes?

“Superficially similar”.

I’m really unappreciative that they LIED to me straight up about the parts being able to fit.

I’m going to have to call them. Trying REALLY hard to be their customer here. I wonder if they will let me order it or if I try again in a week from another email….

Any one else have a pm1236t you could send me the nameplate of so that I can get them to work with me here?

I made an inquiry with modern tools as well. They have a track record of helping me out on oddball parts for machines they don’t sell.

When i noticed the exactness of the castings & fittings of the Sait PM plated machines to my Taiwanese plated machine the course instructor would not acknowledge or accept that there would be a connection to off-shore manufacture neither ...they paid for good ol' US quality and "by god that's what we have"

Well, that’s the conclusion of the request I guess.

They lied straight up about the manufacture of their machines, and also refused my business for a couple grand worth of parts.

Sweet, well done.

Seems like a lose lose to me?

Other electricians come into our business and buy parts… we take the money?

In fairness to them, they probably get a lot of parts bought like that, then the customer wants a refund when it doesn't fit, even though it looks the same.

I know you said you would assume liability, but with the ability to get visa/PayPal to reverse the transaction they've probably been screwed before and have decided it wasn't in their financial interest.

It's not like they decided that for no reason at all

Now, if you really wanted it, I'm sure you could email them from a different address and say you have a PMxxx lathe you purchased from some guy that was missing xxxx parts.

Note: I am not a PM customer, never have been, likely never will be, and have no dog in the fight, nor would this sway my decision whether or not to purchase from them in the future, but just simply always two different views to the picture.
