A near miss and big consequences

Mine is mostly itchy now but they say the pain can be 8 to 10 out of 10 for some people.
I hope I never get shingles, I will be looking into the Shingrix vaccine as soon as possible. 8 out of 10 is pretty high pain I can confidently say, having been there and above 3 times for sure (a bunch of other stories).
My dad had a DVT - he was travelling for work and he was lucky he was with someone clued in enough to drive straight to the hospital after looking at him.
Best wishes on the recovery to both of you.

My mom had shingles twice for sure, and maybe a third time. Very painful. The vaccines were not available at the time, but once there was one, she lined up for without hesitation!

If you've never had Chicken pox you can't get shingles. If you've got shingles you can't give anyone shingles but you can give someone chicken pox.
The Shingrix is available at pharmacies here in SK but only with a prescription from a Dr. It's a 2 dose vaccine.

I know from family experiences that I did not want to get shingles so as soon as I was able to get vaccinated I did. I don't remember if it was the first dose of the vaccine or the second but one of them knocked me on my keester! Very rough 3 days I believe. The other dose was unpleasant for me as well but not nearly as bad.

So here's the lowdown from my Pharmacist wife. You may not know you had chickenpox as for some it barely presents itself. For example our older son had 4 pox. Our late son Misha was covered.

So the advice from Pharmacists is get the vaccine anyway.

@Dabbler I hope you are feeling better and on the mend.
Since the China Cough I am very cautious as to what vaccines I get. I had the original China Cough just before the great shutdown it was damn nasty and I would not wish it on my worst enemy. I figure I got it at one of the hospitals up in Ottawa as (my son and I) were in everyone one of them with the wife who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and was stage 4.
The sort of funny thing is I got it, son got it and my brother who also lives with us didn't get a sniffle.
Linda just brings my vaccines home and stabs me in the dining room.
Love " the stabs me in the dining room." part.

So the next one is measles and here it comes. My spouse phoned healthlink here in AB. She learned before 1972 or so the vaccine was pretty ineffective and recommended a booster. I’m certain I never got that one so I’m due for two shots. Call 811 and you can make an appointment. Mine is May 31.

My understanding is for people born after 1970 they should consider themselves "Not" immune and those born before 1970 are considered immune.

People over 70 can still get measles if they never had it as a child. People over 70 are only immune of they had measles as a child. Almost everyone did though.

I forget if if I did or not.

My Doc said don’t worry about getting the measles vaccine at my age (never had it and have had 5 full vaccination courses for international travel - including Asia & Africa - including when I was in the Navy): based on my age it was virtually impossible that I didn’t have measles growing up. Measles is the most infectious disease out there.

How many of you are due for a tetanus update?
Had mine updated last year.

Funny thing the father inlaw, Charlie, lived with us when my son was around 4 or 5. Charlie sired 7 kids and when my son came down with the mumps no big deal just ran it's course however Charlie swole up like a fall chipmunk and was sick as dog. Somehow he had avoided getting it from his own kids.

we more likely to be in contact with iron or steel, we're at higher risk than many.
^ agreed. Plus, often that chunk of steel has dirt and rust on it. I keep my tetanus up to date - besides, my wife was a nurse and she’s more dangerous than the tetanus if I don’t.

It doesn’t take long either in the 70’s I stomped on a board and took a nail in the thigh from the board flipping up around 9:30 am by 11:00 I couldn’t walk on it and was dragging myself on the floor nailing off a sub floor waiting for the boss to come back
