Working on my South Bend 9C

I guess I could move the lathe forward on the bench but then the handwheels would extend past the edge of the bench, which I don't love because I'll walk into them...
One of my most dreadful moments when machining was a direct result of a handwheel from my mill hanging over a bench edge. I was cutting an octagon barrel from a new barrel blank...everything was going perfect, 3 of the slabs done and in the middle of cutting the fourth...I hade a perfect job going when I stood up from my :watching my mill" chair beside the bench and my belt buckle hooked that hand wheel and gouged that cutter into that flat quicker than I could blink...did the emergency stop button thing but damage was already done...a deep gouge into the side of that brand new barrel blank. I thought I had totaly fcked that barrel but after the dust settled from throwing shit around the shop, I relized the gouge wasnt any deeper than a regular dovetail cut for a barrel sight...tho a very distasteful blemish in the presentation , the barrel is still safe to use.

Alright got my distances figured out, drive assembly bolted back down, and a longer serpentine belt and longer turnbuckle coming this Sunday so I can get it all reassembled. I'll wait until all parts are confirmed to fit before bolting down the bed. In the meantime, deep cleaning (as if I wasn't going to cover it in brass dust again right away...)

Tapped and will install the oilers once the lathe goes back together (belt and turnbuckle arrive tomorrow).

Unfortunately I need to drag this beast back off the wall for the third time this week to access our fiber line because Telus has failed to fix our internet several times this week. It's getting old...

Hi Michael,

We used to have Fiber to the local box and then copper from there. I also got the phone line from the same source. When I contacted my provider to renew my internet, they said that I would have to have fiber to the house as the POTS was being discontinued.

It would have cost me around £200 plus the monthly fees just to get the internet and phone line back. I refused to be blackmailed into these extortionate fees just to get my internet back, and within hours of me refusing to agree to the new contract and fees, my connection was cut off and the phone line was disconnected. I wanted to keep my old phone number but it was back to the high costs.

The net result was I went with a mobile phone company and 4G internet, I now pay much less now than I was paying before, actually less than half ! OK, I no longer get 100 Mb plus more like 40 Mb, and for the cost of a relatively cheap smart phone have contact 24/7.

Sounds like same old same old there on the other side of the pond as it is here in Canada for the telecom providers.

They are all crooks. When they know they have you, pray for our souls.

All us old guys probably remember modems over a phone line, then DSL over a phone line, then line of sight radios, then high speed cellular, then cable, and now fiber.

For us here in rural Ontario high speed meant 3 Mb over line of sight radios. Cellular was maybe 5x faster, but very unreliable with spotty coverage.

100Mb Cable and Fiber are coming, but my own connection is maybe 3-5 years away and may not happen at all.

So we recently went with Starlink. We typically get 20-30Mb both up and down with unlimited data. It costs more than line of sight radio, but less than cable/fiber. Overall, we are happy.

Hi Susquatch

"All us old guys probably remember modems over a phone line, then DSL over a phone line, then line of sight radios, then high speed cellular, then cable, and now fiber."

Believe it or not I still have a brand new still in the box Modem ! I remember the scammers that would redirect your internet connection to the Maldives or Virgin isles so that you were paying lots of money to them. I also recall that if you weren't taking notice they would put nasty stuff on your computer and redirect others to access it.

As one of the younger guns here I think, I'm quite glad at home dial up didn't hit until middle school or so. I had many formative years in the before times.
