Watching your vid, i was kinda reminded of an ancient birth control method.
When the tool is advancing fast & getting VERY close to the chuck & is obscured by the birdsnest of swarf, you GOTTA pull out on time.

Yeah I uh didn't love that part! That was at 54 TPI, so I'll probably slow it down before the next pass.

And no, I shouldn't have had my hand in there clearing swarf. Bad habit I need to break.

Primary tapers are in so next we have to move to the wood lathe for final shaping and wet sanding.

I'd like more of that material, but getting all my blanks from the US makes it a hassle now.

Hand feeding the compound slide doesn't give quite as clean results but this is still plenty acceptable pre-sanding!

If you look on YouTube a lot of people have made an attachment you Chuck in a small cordless drill to make this better

Could try it, but so far it's not a real issue since it's off to get sanded next anyway, so a few marks will get sorted.

Collet chuck and base plate are through customs, hooray. I'm sure it'll only be a few weeks getting here from Mississauga 😉

From it’s condition, it lived a cushy life in a city repair shop in Seattle.
I use it A LOT.
