Do you have a small propane torch? A little heat might let the wd40 in a little deeper. I wouldn't get it too hot, but so it's uncomfortable to hold should be about right...
You can try a crayon, with heat, too

Golem, just for reference this white cat whisker In the dial indicator box is from our guy Rocket J. Cat (Rocky), It measures .013 at the butt end where it plugs into his cheek, down to the end, .001
BTW the P looking thing is the Mitutoyo supplied tool for zeroing out my calipers.

Rocky is looking into the sheep pen area thru the garden gate in the photo.
He is a working barn cat, & a great mouser/ratter/friend.
To be clear i didn’t yank the whisker outa his snout, he left it in the feed bowl for me. ;-)
