Welcome to Westwood Metalworks, What is he building in there?

Well, as per usual around here, something else came up and i didn't get around to that stand until today.

I had to call another audible on the design as I found enough 2x2 square tube to build all the legs from too. Found them in my stock rack.....who'da thunk it..... I love using up scraps and remnants on stuff like this.

Pics, because everyone loves pics...

Legs I was able to get from 4 different offcuts of 2" sq hidden in my stock rack, and one hiding in the center of a stick of 3x3 in the corner. Lucky.

All welded up...Kinda.

The taller portion for the pressure tank is only sitting on there for now. My floor is WAY too out of level to weld it in place there. That crack in the middle there, has at least an inch run from left to right from one leg to the other.... Actually, just thinking about it now while typing this, I'm going to cut it apart and add some bolt on flanges where the red is drawn. Will make it easier to level, and get it down the stairs too. Still needs some cross bracing too.

That's it for today. I also still need to make the shelf for the pump below, and figure out how to bolt all that together. Tonight's couch job....

Gotta love it.

Especially your shop.

I would feel right at home in there. That's a place where a fellow can get some real work done. I love it!

A few hours later....

I cut the 10" legs off the main frame.

Cut 1/2" off them

Cut some feet from some scraps (hence the slice marks on it) 2x1/4" flatbar. Stacked and tack together so I could drill through 5/16" for a 3/8" UNC. Then opened up 2 of the nicer once for the top feet.

Layed out and welded the bottom pads to the main frame

Usually past Dan does nothing but screws over future Dan, but in this case he took the time to make a nice welding fixture to weld feet onto tubing nice and square.

I made that for a railing job a while back. Sure was handy to have. I think there's more detail on it somewhere in this thread, back around summer 2024.

All done for tonight. It will bolt together now.

Still have the shelf to do, and some bracing, but that's work for tomorrow. Then paint. Yes, I'm actually going to paint this one 😀 (I promise)

Ship in a bottle is done.

The taller part bolts to the main frame now, and will be MUCH easier to get downstairs and into the utility room now. Just gotta cut the plywood tops, and take it downstairs tomorrow. The kids agreed to paint it, so I'm off the hook for that. 😀 I can't wait to get it out of the shop already.......

All "done" the well pump/water heater stand. Decided to weld in some bracing. Needed? Probably not, but it's not going anywhere now.....Also put some feet on it so I can anchor to the floor. Needed? Probably not either......Good place to hide in case of an earthquake....Also happy I used up a bunch of scraps and short stuff on this. Was accumulating too much, and it was become a PITA.

2 feet left to weld on and....

Had a spare, but still thought it was funny. I was expecting to run out of gas TBH. Didn't figure I'd get through welding this without it running out, but it's still near E (tough to see back there).

Letting it cool down before I haul it downstairs, then I'll get the kids to slap a few coats of paint on it this week before screwing the plywood tops down.

Got my floor back again. Did a big cleanup out in the shop, cleaned and oiled the lathe AND mill, and swept all the nooks and crannys while puttering around for a few hours pondering past and future projects.

That lathe hasn't been that clean in a LOOOOONG time. I know some of you are saying "that's clean?" 😀

Not exactly sure what I'm going to get into next. There's a couple projects on the go that need a nudge closer to the finish line, so I think I'll just chip away those for a while. Maybe I'll just enjoy the clean shop for a bit longer.....I like having a variety of projects on the go, so I can work on whatever I feel like at the time and it never seems like a chore that I HAVE to do. But when I have too many things on the go I tend to not do ANY of them lol. I feel like that's been the case for the past few months, so I'll probably just keep paring down the current list before starting something new.......

I have a shop space problem that's bothering me like a chip stuck in my heel. Something has to move, or go, and It's driving me in circles trying to sort it out. The belt grinder, and surface grinder being the biggest antagonists......I have an idea, but it's a game of inches, and by my current math, it's 4" too much....

Trying out a couple different hole designs, and operations to gauge the best way to make these air tool hangers. Didn't feel like standing anymore or else I would have just started cutting and drilling some scrap. CAD is great for figuring stuff like this quickly 😀
My air tool storage rack is a chunk of aluminum bar, drilled and tapped 1/4” female npt , with male npt x snap couplings installed.

Ya, I've seen the coupler ones and I like that idea too, but the $$ adds up even with cheap ones. I don't want to do a straight angle iron and leave the inlets exposed to all the grinding grit either. Thought of another idea on the drive home too, and think I have some suitable round tube to try and make it work too. I'll play around with some scrap tonight and come up with a plan....

Probably would be able to print snap in holder that would be fine. I haven't really looked, but I'm sure there's probably a bunch of good designs for this out there.

For context, this will be on the side of my "new" welding table I'm working on this weekend (the upper cross bars on the sides). I'd rather keep it steel and robust. The good news is I found some suitable pipe and am sure my idea will work. The bad news is, I tweaked my back last night pulling some material out of the saw. Didn't seem too bad at the time, and usually I can sleep those off, but today has been nothing but spasms and limited range of motion. On the couch on a heating pad right now, and really wishing I was outside working on this. I cut all the material last night, just need to deburr and clean some scale/rust off a few pieces.

Still have a couple details to figure out and some tool storage stuff I didn't bother drawing, but that's the gist of it. I'll be using the 1/2" top from my existing table, and building the frame to envelope the cabinet that is currently holding my belt grinder. Effectively combining the two and giving me 2'x4' of floorspace back. Not to mention adding wheels to my welding table that I've long wished it had.

I really just wanted this to be a quick and dirty build, but it's already creeping......

The belt grinder will get it's own mobile stand. I want to be able to wheel it outside for heavy use, and to blow it off periodically.

Once those things are done, there will be some "fun" tool shuffling going on. I'll be patient and wait for spring on that one though. I'll need to move some stuff outside just to be able to move the mill and other stuff around like one of those sliding block puzzles.

Machine tool tetris is a favorite pastime for many of us I think...... I hate when you get to the last piece and it doesn't fit and you get to start all over again. 😕
No wonder your back is sore, mine is getting that way just thinking about it. 😛
