We all have our vises….

Let's just say that the land is worth much more without the rail car than it was ever going to save in heating costs. Not to mention that insurance wasn't an option if it went south.
The uncle has done quite well for himself. Worrying about the house burning down over a few dollars wasn't sitting well with him and I get that. It's one of those "generational" properties and I am too young to remember when it was in its full glory, but in my younger years it was still a sight to behold perched on the top of that massive granite outcrop over looking the barns and corrall on one side, and the ships passing on the other. It was getting neglected in Grampa's later years, but I believe is now restored. I haven't been there in several years.

Ive seen it done...Old school RR section foreman lived in our small town. Ol' Steve could split a rail with 3 whacks of a sledge hammer & big chisel....rail cuts were clean and almost as straight as a saw-cut. Hit it on one flange then roll and hit on the other then a final hit on top or bottom.
Another note on my friend Steve...one of the toughest men I ever knew, his teen years spent as a Polish freedom fighter in WW ll... they dont build em like him anymore!!

Indeed they don't. Very impressive trick - I'd pay for a ticket to see it done.

Had about 15 minutes of free time so I brazed on a second key to retain the thread box. Purists may say to keep the video original but it will be put to use and it is a “period type” repair.

Works well. You will note the “crack” in the thread tube, however, that is actually the fold line where the blacksmith made a cylinder from flat plate. I kept the threaded shaft in for a heat sink so as not to allow the inner threads to be messed up.

That would be the Opel and since Dad went into the hospital it has been only a few hours shop time here and there. Hopefully going full bore on the car in a month or so?????
