Some Goodies

A bit of clean up on that Narex and you'll love it.
I'm in the process now. This has an MT5 shank. My mill uses NMTB 40. The newer Narex units use interchangeable shanks that are bolted on with several bolts on a flange. This one is maybe an earlier model, and I'm not sure how it attaches. So we'll see once its all apart.

Well, this sucks😕 Its all apart and I cannot find any way that the shank can come off. No screws, no pins, nothing! From the bottom, there is a center recess. So perhaps it's all integral.

The shank is hard....file doesn't bite. Maybe I can put it between centers and use CBN cutters. That's if I have enough meat. It's an MT5, my mill is NMTB 40. I'll have to see.

Or maybe, clean it all up, reassemble and sell.

Well, I only paid $350.00 at the auction.

I might be mixing up Narex with Wohlhaupter but I think some (majority) models are integral vs replaceable arbors. Somewhere in my travels I stumbled on a Narex reference table someone constructed from different generations of catalogs & apparently even that info source was confusing because of how they disinguished 'available as Arbor X' vs being able to buy a the Arbor X itself seperately to do the conversion. I seem to recall most of the bigger head versions were integral.

Thank you for looking around. I did see that, but the stick-out of that unit is almost 7", then add on the height of the Narex boring head: 5", plus a cutter, say 2", thats 14". The maximum height of my milling machine from table, (let alone mill vise), to spindle is 18.5". So not an ideal set-up.

Maybe you are not quite there yet, but what is the nature of the abrasive wheel? Is it removable & replaceable with any of the inexpensive diamond or CNN offerrings from China?
Yeah, not quite there yet, but I did download a pdf:
The wheels are 6" in diameter in diamond or Borazon. The table tilts, and slides left and right very smoothly, probably bearings, and on the surface has protractor markings and a locking fence. My main idea is to use this to accurately hone hss lathe cutters, as well as carbide inserts.

I can see that as a problem. Very carefully chuck the head in a four-jaw until it runs dead true, then cut/grind the shank to the largest straight shank you can achieve. Then hold it in a nmtb collet for use.
