I didn't know that Mitutoyo made those. I'd love to see them. I have a no-name set but I don't really trust them. I typically do a half dozen measurements and average them.

I’ve been scoping out starrett ones on eBay….

Just google searched Mitu small hole gauges and these popped up.

On that note, I'll add google, Kijiji, ebay, and Facebook searches. Although maybe I should wait for someone to tell me how much better the Mitutoyo and Starrett ones are than the knockoffs.

I had a set of no name hole gauges (not the small hole ones) and used them for several years. They were crazy cheap (like $22 or something) and although I did take them apart and clean them up a bit rusty springs and roughish edges, they seemed to perform ok. A couple of years ago I came across a like new set of Mitutoyo's that my cheap one were obviously patterned off of. I compared the two sets in terms of accuracy and repeatability and found no difference. The Mitutoyos were a bit nicer visually and a bit smoother and better finished. I sold the cheap ones but wouldn't hesitate to buy the them again if I needed a set and that was all I could afford.

I picked up some PA on sale, I got tired of the maybe factor and bought a set of Mits, fairly recently. I'm getting old, there was time when I could tell you how much , where, and when . I was spending money after all. I think it was on Ebay or full price KBC.
 
I find these are kind of like the big brother bore gages (snap gages). The principle is simple. Tighten them so they have just enough tension grip they will displace to minimum position rocked through the bore. But stay put enough so they can be measured with micrometer. The first knockoff set I bought were not well made made. Sticky threads or coarser threads or misshapen anvil or gritty machined surfaces... For whatever reason they didn't have the same smooth feel right in the tightening zone where you need it, so measurement readings varied which kind of defeats the purpose. The brand name ones were much better. Of course things change over the years, so today could be different again. Gage pin sets occupy a lot of space & cost money too. But that's another way of getting (arguably more accurate) bore indication.

The main reason I have gauge pins is because my bore gauges suck.

But I'm also fussy about such things and like to measure several times several ways. Nothing bugs me more than not knowing where I am vs where I wanna be.
