Stan send me a message today while I was driving to Hamilton... something about seeing if he can get fork lift people for me... I've moved on...Is Stan still with us?
There is a nice Albrecht keyless chuck on a R8 arbor that I'm going to tell my friend in Milton about, since he is close, he doesn't have one and he can afford it.Stan send me a message today while I was driving to Hamilton... something about seeing if he can get fork lift people for me... My brother and I spent 1 1/2hrs with the widow and her brother. We looked at the lathe and a great deal of tooling in a cabinet and on shelving... there was not a single item from mainland china or taiwan. It was all european and US made quality goods. We will be helping the owner with price estimates and in listing and selling it in reasonable lots. The owner made it clear that she would not accept any offer today, but that she needed to "check" our offer before deciding. That's cool. I'd have loved to have had her accept the offer tonight just so I know I can stop looking for lathes, but meh I look for lathes all the time anyways.
There are some awesome MT reamers in large sizes that we cant use, but I still covet. There is some good tooling people here will appreciate.
My brother made a good fair offer on the lathe and some lathe tooling, the chuck is not a brand name, nor is the the rusty 4 jaw chuck anything special, but the lathe is well maintained and runs well. We also identified items we'd like to buy in January when the budgets rebound. I made a fair offer on an expensive lathe tool. to sweeten the overall deal, and also said I would like to look at everything in more detail to make offers at a later date once I check my budget and what items I am in most need of.
There was a Starrett gauge set I got a pic of that will be for sale.. If you want to make an offer I can pass it along
There was an Alina K22 dial indicator that I thought was nice. There were several other indicators and mitutoyu digital calipers (legit ones) that the owner will be putting up for saleThere is a nice Albrecht keyless chuck on a R8 arbor that I'm going to tell my friend in Milton about, since he is close, he doesn't have one and he can afford it.
Thanks, I appreciate that. My brother is very personable and he and the widow got along very well. she liked his passion, knowledge and how much he knew about he husbands tools especially what her husband had made himself. I have high hopes. This lathe is older than he wanted initially but it is all that he really needs and a nice lathe.First impressions mean a lot in cases like this, I hope yours went well and it works out well for you.
This is fair and ethical. I have no problems with it you making out like a bandit, honestly I'd do the same.I just recently bought my Colchester Chipmaster lathe and paid $750 because the seller insisted I make an offer before I had a chance to view the lathe. He then said he had someone that was offering $500.
He was a business person in the industry and the lathe owner, so I don't feel too badly for paying less than I was willing to pay.
Now how many people will show up having said I'll pay $4000 and then up their offer when they see a pratt burnerd 4 jaw chuck, a ER collet chuck and a full complement of 12 EC collets?
I have my way I'm comfortable doing business that is fair and ethical and I'll stick with it.

after we drove... but hey it is what it isBefore you drove? Fine, eyes wide open. If after, that is almost beyond brutal.
I also asked what the power requirements were, are they 575v 3 phase 60hz, or 440V 3 phase 60 hz like my Chipmaster lathe came with, or something else?
I'd like to have the size confirmed, it appears to be 1340 which is what we've been looking for, but two others we looked at turned out to be the short bed 1335 versions. I think I see a foot brake, but I'd like that confirmed...

Yeah I remained calm, why not. Well at least until the drive home and hitting nasty lake effect snow and black ice around Oakville/Mississauga border. Then I think I shat myself a little as the car started to slowly oscillate and skateWow. Good for you for remaining calm.
What are the basic specs on the machine, then?
Craig
Let me know if your Milton buddy isn't interested, I'd be most interested in that chuck myself.
I thought you said you decided to buy a new machine?I think at this point, people who are interested will need to do their own due diligence, I'm not going to help others outbid us because they can save hours of time and fuel $$ to go there from my giving them free information..
At this point I've already decided that a new machine is the better option, and I just need to convince my brother to let me put a couple grand into the purchase to make that happen. Newmarket would be a far easier pick up.
