Magnetic lathe chucks

I'm wondering from those who have them, the pros and cons of magnetic lathe chucks.

They don't seem very common. I first saw one used by YouTuber Stefan Gotteswinter.

I'd think swarf would cling to them something awful and hinder their use?

I don't have one, but have seen them on cylindrical grinders. That's going back over thirty years since I worked in that shop.

Swarf wouldn't be an issue if you just used them on aluminum.

Just kidding!

Ha ha you got me!

I did think about that and then realized some of the places I think I would want the features of a magnetic chuck may very well be with aluminum or brass projects.

In the meantime I think I will make an adjustable chuck spider for my 3 jaw.

The problem with the magnetic chuck is that you would need a large area of "sticking" on order to make sure part does not move - and even then any work would have to be very "delicate". On the other hand, you could work with flat sock that otherwise is hard to hold on a lathe. Niche application.

Ok, you got me wondering....

How do you work on aluminium or brass with a magnetic chuck......?

I had to look this up....

That's kind of cool.....
Oh ya and if you haven't seen Stefan Gotteswinter video where he is testing out his shop made tool post grinder here is the link.https://youtu.be/znTTiDv02GM
He uses a magnetic chuck near the end of the video to hold a small bearing race.

where do you get a magnetic chuck? A few searches kbc, shars, aliexpress, nothing.

I bought mine out of the UK from a supplier. It is offshore made, but was cheaper than I could buy off Ebay and Amazon at the time. The shipping was super cheap too.

It is a 6" one, wit pretty good holding power. I found another way to do the job it was intended for, soi it sits...
