Magnetic lathe chucks

So I see parallel lines or centrifugal/circular rings on the images of the round magnetic chucks I've come across? Is one style preferred over the other. Would the circular ring style suggest that the magnetic force would be centrifugal as well and wouldn't that make positioning items on the chuck difficult?

I don't know. I've never got around to using them. I got them in case I would need them sometime. Does anyone here have experience using them?

Not yet but I just dusted off an 8" one so maybe its time to make a backing plate for it after its been on a shelf for few years.

I used mine by bolting it to my faceplate. It is good for very light cuts in soft steel. Thinning a washer, for instance. To use it, you use scaffolding to precent it from slipping along the face.

For those of you that have never seen a magnetic chuck used in a lathe for practical purposes: fast forward to 2: 46 and see a very skilled machinist do it....
