  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Ontario GTA West area meetup is planned for Saturday April 26th at Greasemonkeys shop in Aylmer Ontario. If you are interested and haven’t signed up yet, click here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Just got my first lathe, and can’t find metal stock to practice!

After you try some different steel types you'll begin to see how differently they machine. I use a lot of 1018 cold roll steel and also alot of 303 stainless. The 1018 alway needs a little sandpaper to get a nice finish, the 303 machines smooth as glass, no sandpaper required. Huge difference in price though, a 10 foot lenght of 1/2" round 1018 is about $10 from General steel. I bought 10 feet of the same size of 303 from metal supermarket about 2 years ago for $80.

What kind of steel does everyone suggest i start practicing with? I’ve been playing with a couple pieces of aluminum lately, but wamt to try soMe steel
I work with aluminium most time for my paramotor part's easy to work not hard on cutter.

On Mc pherson strut on car, truck or van the shaft is a very nice piece. I don't know how hard it is . This shaft is very nice to make project and very strong. Some day I will try to work on it on my Ulthilathe.
