Ya, Canadians are notoriously metrologically bilingual. I'm prolly as bad as the worst of them. I was born and educated in imperial. So that's my native tongue. I still can't think in metric. I think in imperial. But I freely translate back N forth from one dialect to the other.

I enjoy the Metric - Imperial banter I see on various UTube channels . . . I once saw a metric numeral STATED in "Farthings" which IIRC, is a Sixth of one mile (???) for Horse Racing.... it was like this:

2.35mm OR 0.0000000013 FARTHINGS, (I created that Farthing Number, for analogy) . . .

There are a "few" Super Machinists who banter thata way , and a few who are used as a "friendly Pick on them", Stephen in Germany is one who is spoken of as he ACTUALLY works metrics to 0.000X mm, but he is a VERY ADVANCED MACHINIST.

Still when a person in New Zealand, speaks of "Stephen", everyone Knows who they are refering to. Stephen also uses Imperial when needed BUT I think for his work he is out to Hundred Thousandths ! ! ! REALLY!

me, I can do repeated BRASS to 1/2 a thou, 0.0005 inches with my TAIG.

That is 1/20 the thickness of a Frog's EYE LASH . . .

Hi there. I am looking to build a little machine shop in my shed. I have machining experience, And am looking for a 12 ish by 30 ish lathe to start. Thanks for the forum.

I bought my used 13x40 in Langley Township, 17 months ago after about 9 months of watching marketplace etc. Be patient and avoid the rusty worn out ones. As you're looking, formulate a plan for moving something that is both top heavy and heavy. I think I still have the name of someone in East Van with a hiab, skates and flatbed, who has moved machine shops. Alternatively a tow truck makes a good mobile crane. Sorry I don't know of any lathes for sale right now.

I bought a new mill 2 years ago. No regrets. From a supplier that actually offers some support & service (Modern Tool)
I bought a used lathe - it is fine but has issues
I prefer new. No surprises, but you pay for that comfort level. Sometimes new comes with issues but are or should be easier to fix..
If you get lucky - used can be awesome - or not.

I am now leaning toward the BusyBee CX701. 12x28. Would come in about $3000 cheaper than a landed PM-1228.
Alas BusyBee is out of stock on that too !!. It is on sale now, BB says I can pay now and get delivery later.....Slow boat from china

Good Luck, the BB, is one of the "branded names" of a well designed product, I have heard though, that as ALL product s today, it WILL need a bit of tuning!

As I sold my "branded name" of that over a decade ago, I am sure others will be there to help you with >>>those<<< details, I am doing ONLY micro lathes and mills now, due to limited space!
