Cincinnati No 2 Cutter Grinder Restoration

John. I read somewhere that tables for the grinders (with ball bearing ) have to be transported separately. Or it is urban legends?

The balls and cages were removed, wood placed onto the ways and the table were strapped down for transport. Unfortunately, sometime in the past it looks like the first one I’ve started cleaning wasn’t done this way. I can see round dimples in the flat way of the table where the balls have (I assume) bouncing in transport. Hopefully the second one is in better shape.

ball or roller, not urban legend although I suspect of the table is firmly strapped down things would be ok. When I've done it, they come out before transport. The issue as I understand it is that the table is held down by gravity so even small bumps cause it jump and the impact on the rolling elements causing brinelling.

How do the felts go into the work head? I put two 1/8” felts on each end into the rings and it causes the spindle to lock up. I must be doing it wrong

@JohnH my work head looks like this:

It has a felt ring on the big end under an “oil” screw:

The other end has no oil screw and is similar to your end that has the labyrinth type seal (those annular rings).

This bolt in the top is used to lock the spindle (should be a bit fancier but does the job). Beside this bolt is a ball oiler for lubing the shaft and the front bearing. You may have a different design of work head? Mine has one end 50 taper and the other is Brown and Sharp for which I have no tooling.

Mine is exactly the same design except instead of the brown and sharp taper I have MT5 taper. I had put felt into the labyrinth seal rings on each end. I guess these rings should be empty and the only felt is on the big end?
