  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Ontario GTA West area meetup is planned for Saturday April 26th at Greasemonkeys shop in Aylmer Ontario. If you are interested and haven’t signed up yet, click here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Cast iron weights from elevator shaft - AND then vehicle lug nut issues

Did anybody buy any weights? I was advised to have low expectations on the metal quality so I decided against. But it would good to know.

That would be great! wait - @chickenlights is here Thursday, so I should get the weights right away. Hmmmmm

Craig, they are likely foundry ends, which will include carbides and slag. this is very common for elevator weights, window washer weights, etc. I tried to cut up some elevator weights when I was a young man and found it to be steel with a lot of hardened inclusions in it.

I wrecked several bandsaw blades before I quit.

@Dabbler, @phaxtris Do either of you have the means to cut one of those weights up? If they truly are cast iron I would be interested in splitting one with you.

Craig

I'm not really in need of one, unless is very cheap, but I don't mind helping grab them

If it's cast iron, zip cut and a sledgehammer is the only way I have to cut something that thick, cast steel I could torch one in half

Sorry I'm not clear on the schedule. Not 100% from Covid yet. seller still hasn't replied.

I'm actually building an elevator and they are the perfect size and shape for my counterweight system. 16692314809141332816020261098624.jpg

I finally got a reply this morning, he asked me what I wanted to pay - even though I referenced the telephone conversation he had with Darren. So I replied and am waiting for his response.
