Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. If you haven't already purchased triple square sockets and have a selection of torx drivers you'll want to do some shopping.
I think you said earlier that your car has a manual transmission. Mine has auto and I called VW the other day to find out what transmission fluid there costs.....$55/litre and I need 6 litres. It's hard to find European spec oil that VW calls for. I'm sure I can find it cheaper somewhere! I was expecting $12-15 /litre.

Well what i call a 12 point socket fits over the external diameter of a bolt head, triple square (also called zxn) sockets look like torx (internal) but they are not the same. I think they do that just to piss off people when you accidently schmoo out the corners of your bolt by using the wrong driver.
I'll pick some up, thanks for the tip!

I can't say yet whether they are good or bad as I haven't used them enough yet but so far one of them hasn't broke under maximum torque of my impact wrench. Unfortunately neither has the rusted and seized bolt let loose either. Acetylene torch is coming out next for some added persuasion.
Swapped the wheels out on the Golf and got the front up on jackstands tonight.
For sh!ts and giggles I removed the passenger side top strut retaining nut and the whole thing just dropped about 3 inches. Loosened the pinch bolt on the steering knuckle and to my very great surprise I was able to easily twist the strut. If it weren't for the axle hitting the subframe and preventing the control arm from dropping more I would have had the strut out.

General source of decent hardening steel. I don't know the diameter of the material, so the actual use still TBD.

The front springs on my Jetta wagon did the same.
Maybe a common VW failure?
I've never heard of another make with catastrophic coil spring failure.
Interesting. I've not encountered this before either.
While not a coil spring, ford pickups had a torsion bar in the front end, a parts guy I knew at a dealership said they couldn’t even get the trucks off the car carrier without at least one breaking a torsion bar. They had 2 trucks on the lot they couldn’t sell as had run out of replacement bars, were waiting for more.
Am not sure how common it is, but have seen a few dodge pickups with a broken front coil spring, a couple of 1500’s, a couple of 3500’s. 2 wheel drive and 4X4’s.
