2002 VW Golf refurb

Received my OBD11 device today. Quite a small device. Installed the OBD11VAG app and scanned the Dub.
Total of two major faults:
- P1649 - Databus drivetrain missing message from ABS control module
- 01316 - Brake Control module

Neat feature is that beside each fault message there's a Google icon which goes out and gets info on what the fault means.
As a bonus it will also read my '08 F150 and my 2012 Mazda. 🙂
So far I'm impressed.

Could be worse....I'm expecting more detail on my engine and transmission control module flags that I got with my old code reader...when I get my new code reader.
I'm pretty sure it is going to say "don't worry about these things, erase codes and drive on" .

Nice, I wonder why I see more people going after the VW golf. My younger brother refurbished an old GTI as the first old vehicle he refurbished.

He isn't all that different from the rest of us, he just needed an excuse for another tool.

I think he mentioned something about a clutch needing to be replaced so the tranny will need to come out.

Hmmm. I have never witnessed a clutch fail like that. Will be interesting to see what's up when you get it out. I would not be ordering parts before it was out.

Yes, it's a first for me too. I'm hoping it's nothing more than new clutch, pressure plate and flywheel.

Yup. I considered that maybe it's an issue with the master or slave cylinder but if the clutch wasn't disengaging then I wouldn't be able to put it in gear with the engine running.

Unless the input shaft is broken (been there done that), I think I have broken pretty much every stock part from the input shaft, front yoke, universal joints, differentials and axles, but never a clutch or top loader transmission. Fortunately the aftermarket has much stronger than stock replacements for all of those parts and there is also stronger stock parts that fit in some cases from trucks and certain big block applications you just need to know what your looking for. Fun and games.

The pressure plate in the video did look like it had some sort of funky flex plate arrangement perhaps that broke?

My GTI (1.8T) had something funky they called a “dual mass flywheel”, don’t know if the 2.slow had the same or what the implication would be. I never had it apart so I can’t really speculate but could it be something stuck in the release mechanism maybe the slave cyl??
