  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Cast iron bench vise is partially broken (nut limit stop), how to repair? (No brazing equipment)

Yeah it’s brazing but just with a tig torch. I did a similar repair a few years ago for a friend. He runs a woodworking business with his extended family and someone crashed the big planer and cracked a casting on the side that supports various shafts. He brought it to me and said that parts...

    Hendey T&G Lathe

The tailstock has been the focus of my attention for the last week or so. It’s done now… maybe? It’s a question of how good is good enough. The quill is parallel to the ways within 3 tenths over 4” in both the vertical and horizontal axis. Slightly better in the horizontal than the vertical...

Kira Drill Press with 1/2hp 90v dc motor and KB variable speed drive.

The drill press used to be mine, I bought it with the drive already installed. It has a Leeson DC 1/2hp 90v DC motor.

North America Busy Bee got me…

Busy Bee sent me a label to return them. They didn’t admit to any deception on their part, just said the photo is not meant to represent the exact product you receive… which would be fine if it was noted in the description. They haven’t added that though.

    Nut on dead center

I’m using a mt3 in a sleeve right now. I think if I’m going to bother getting a mt5 (slightly better runout hopefully) I’d get one with threads. The threaded ones tend to cost more. There’s nothing stopping me from tapping it out through the headstock, I’d just prefer to use a nut.

    Nut on dead center

I’ve always seen them described as CNC dead centers. I do think it would be handy for a headstock dead center since it saves having to awkwardly tap on a bar through the spindle to get it out while trying not to let it fall onto something. If I could find one in MT5 at a reasonable price I’d...

Cast iron bench vise is partially broken (nut limit stop), how to repair? (No brazing equipment)

Yes I’ve done it before. The rod is designated ERCuSi-A. You will need get the part clean and pre heat the cast iron. Done correctly, only the rod will melt, the cast iron will get red hot but not form a puddle. Another option is nickel electrodes for stick welding. Here is a good video on...

    Granite Master Square

I don’t really need one this big (16x24x3). But the price was pretty good. Tru Stone brand, which is now a division of Starrett. Sold originally as grade AA, 25 millionths per 6”. Current condition unknown but it came from a ISO certified tool and die shop so I assume it will have been...

Want to know about the current situation of Canadian machining enterprises, who can talk about it briefly?

Westward stuff is all import in my experience. I had the same thought about Gray. Couldn’t find any listed country of manufacture for the vices. In a thread on garage journal someone found some public customs paperwork suggesting the Gray vises are made in Argentina. Most of the gray tools are...

Finally got tired of swaping the tailstock wrench

Some styles of vises have a thrust bearing where the design has the lead screw thrust opposite of the force the vice applies. Could be plain bearing or a roller thrust bearing. For example Kurt style milling Vises.
