    Tips/Techniques MT to R8 adapter?

Tom would something like this work? https://canadianhobbymetalworkers.com/threads/r8-collet-block.9218/ After I ground the jaws in my 3 jaw chuck I can remove and replace the collet holder and be within .001"

    Making 5C Collet Block Nuts

They might not have the G96 brand right now. I have never used the Birchwood brand. My spindle bore is 1 7/16". A drawbar would be simple to make.

    Making 5C Collet Block Nuts

The collet block set I ordered the nut was too big to fit in the bore of my 3 jaw chuck. Making a smaller one was the next project. The 5C collets have an odd sized thread 1.238" x 20 the nuts that came with the collet set measured 1.180" ID. So I turned a piece that would fit the chuck bore...

Tools you waited too long to acquire

After using my shop made R8 collet holder I ordered a set of 5C collets and a pair of collet blocks. They are from Accusize on Amazon. The quality looks good for the price. I will need to make a wrench for the nuts. The nut is .040" too big to fit into the chuck so my next project after the...

    R8 Collet Block

I was running the lathe in reverse and cutting away from the chuck so disengagement was not a concern. I was hoping for a better surface finish with the higher speed.

    R8 Collet Block

I cut the threads on the fittings last night. I tried cutting at 200 RPM and missed the correct mark on the thread dial and lost a couple threads on the first fitting. I slowed it down to 65 RPM to finish both fittings. The coupler that connects to them only screws on to the first 5 threads so...

    R8 Collet Block

I just spent a few minutes cutting threads on another piece of aluminium. If my calculations were right and it is 16 TPI it should fit. The gauge I bought has notches on both sides for getting the correct width of the tip of the tool bit, but the smallest is 10 TPI. The tip width for 16 TPI is...

    R8 Collet Block

The test piece did not fit. I assumed that since it was 1/2" acme it would be 10 threads per inch, its not. The thread is much finer. I used the shops Snap-on bore scope and its definitely an acme thread. I could not find an acme thread gauge but using a standard thread gauge it looks like 16...

    R8 Collet Block

The thread gauge arrived today. I ground a 3/16" bit and did a trial run on a piece of aluminium. I will see how it fits before I cut the threads on the adaptors I made. I will try the test piece tomorrow and see how it fits.

    Things that break

I went to get the KitchenAid cheese grater out of the cupboard and found the handle was badly cracked. Rather than toss it and buy a new one. I made a crude but very durable replacement.
