The Ontario GTA West area meetup is planned for Saturday April 26th at Greasemonkeys shop in Aylmer Ontario. If you are interested and haven’t signed up yet, click here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. What size Lathe ?

I won't pee on little lathes. They have their purpose and many can do great work if you respect their limits. But when you push the swing limits, bigger is always better. It's easy to assume that a lathe will turn parts as big as the lathes swing. But actually doing it will make your head swing...

    Product Cordless tools

Ahhhh, I see! The job just got easier. If you think trucks drive over poles, you should see what farm tractors do in the mixed forest/rock/farmland around here! I'm forever fixing lights, brackets, and frames on tractors and farm equipment! Here is what I would do. KISS. I'd staple a piece of...

    SouthBend turret toolpost mounting questions

I was wondering the same thing. But compounds are typically quite tall to accommodate the two halves plus the leadscrew. I think the height would be too low if that were the case.

I'm thick I guess Dave. Why do you need to know where the center is? What are you doing?

Dan Gelbart posts unusual shop tricks

Dan suggests a bunch of methods that are not really practical in a hobby shop. They do work if you have access to the required chemicals and establish a routine for their use. However, Dan fails to mention that it is next to impossible to use chemical methods to protect internal mechanisms and...

Not sure what you are up to. It's hard to find the center of something that isn't there. For example a hole. Even so, once you find the center, how do you keep it? A DRO is very useful. For small holes, we use a center punch. For big ones, maybe trace it out on paper and find the center of...

Look! A MOAV!! (mother of all vices)

It does looks small. Also badly worn. On the other hand, the screws on most vises are bigger than they need to be from a strength perspective. I think it's mostly done to get decent movement of the Jaws per turn of the handle. Too much thread pitch on a small screw doesn't work very well, and...

New to me Ammco 7" Metal shaper

Looks like that 1/2 horse motor isn't gunna work after all. It's fried internally. Thank God, I plugged it in before I drilled any holes in the shaper bracket. Magic smoke filled the air. Turns out the bearings are toast too. No biggie, it was a free bee. I'll save the mount and the pulley, and...
