  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Edmonton - Can you plane down some oak for me ( 1 cut )

My brothers and I share woodworking tools like that. We all need a miter saw, not a thickness planer. Worst case it's an hour to get it from the other brother to save $600. Last use was 2 years ago, and after cleaning it down I wrapped it in a garbage bag. It's still in that bag.

Same here. Small footprint appeals to me.

    Moving a bridgeport 50m across a paved alley/gravel driveway

Can you rent or borrow an appropriate forklift? Someone with boom truck that can pick it up? You'll still need to pipe roll it to the door I expect. Even plywood across the gravel will cost you more than a tow truck.

It's all new to me. Todays adventures in Facing, turning, and parting. I'd love some input?

Awesome details here. Thank you very much. I did notice there's no relief at all in the HSS tool. I did grind one, although my tooling is very basic at this point. A bandsaw is the next thing on my list. Found a portaband on a desktop stand, and an older freestanding bandsaw but they're...

It's all new to me. Todays adventures in Facing, turning, and parting. I'd love some input?

It didn't look 'right', and I know this is a forming job so you want to really support it. I certainly bit off too much lol. I'll look into this. I raised and lowered the tool on my QCTP several times and eventually, after sharpening it on a coarse stone wheel started to get a good roll...

It's all new to me. Todays adventures in Facing, turning, and parting. I'd love some input?

Grab your coffee or beer and have a seat, and listen to the story of a rookie gettin' his feet wet. I finally had free time to start making actual chips with this old lathe (SB 10K). I'd scratched out a few things with some scraps but it was time to learn how to work it. My QCTP was fitted...

Edmonton - Can you plane down some oak for me ( 1 cut )

I could do it in GTA. For your gradient you'd need to find a way to block up the 1¼" so the planer angles it correctly. I've never seen a home one that does angles. What about a table saw and a belt sander?

    carbide insert storage

I'm not far from you and have an old 3D printer I can fire up for you. It's not super precise but if you're just after a tray or two and can find it on thingiverse, shoot me a PM and I'll see what I can do.

Is there a newbie thread to read on properties of different metals?

Ok! That's as good a start as any. I tried to watch a couple videos on the 'tube there but I do better with written text when I want to jump back and forth for comparisons and such. Thanks!!

Is there a newbie thread to read on properties of different metals?

Rookie question, I know. I did a couple searches and came up empty. Is there a more recent thread than the Sourcing Metal sticky on different types of metals? Maybe one with their machining qualities? The local metal supply shop (B&D Steel here in Burlington) is pretty friendly but I'd like...

Anyone around in Hamilton / Oakville corridor available to mill my QCTP base?

Absolutely. I'm so new at this I don't have any supplies on hand yet. The one thing my lathe was "lacking" was cutting bits. Lots included for the lanturn post, but only 1 or 2 for the 4-position post. I found a carbide tip holder I had from a brake lathe and that cut much better than any of...

Anyone around in Hamilton / Oakville corridor available to mill my QCTP base?

Ahhh! Ya that'd do it too. I just wanted to retain as much material as possible. Stopped over at our neighbours place and left it with him to see if he can fit it for me. I have a lot to learn :)

Anyone around in Hamilton / Oakville corridor available to mill my QCTP base?

That's great Craig! Thank you for the offer. There is a local shop that we've used but the guy I talked to before has left so I'm not sure if I can still use them for such a small job. If they're unreasonable I'll definitely take you up on that offer!! If I get a favorable reply from the...

Anyone around in Hamilton / Oakville corridor available to mill my QCTP base?

I appreciate the suggestions! I tried mounting up the rectangular piece in my vertical milling attachment using just the set screws. However I discovered a lot of play in it. Even with the gib screws snugged the movable part of the attachment could deflect from under the wedge with little...
