    Cheap Bstrd Thread

Something I fortunately learned before I got my own machines, was to bag the chips. They end up everywhere (i.e. tires, bare feet) once they get loose in the garbage can. Back on topic, I bought a full set of 1/2" shank carbide round-over router bits for less than the price of one HSS radius...

Looking for milling machine purchase help/advice

Just for reference, I bought the cheapest most economical 2-axis DRO I could find for my lathe on Aliexpress. It was less than $200 in 2018. Early this year one of the scales failed, the first problem I've had of any sort. Cost me $70 for a replacement.

Tips/Techniques Wall covering in garage shop.

15/32 (12mm) OSB for me. Two coats of semi-gloss white makes it look real nice. Sort of like some of those old-school stucco jobs. Love being able to put screws in wherever needed. I HATE drywall and would never put it in a shop. I don't even like it in the house.

    Cutting HSS Lathe Bit Stock

HSS does not lose it's hardness by "overheating". That's what makes it special. It has to be heated above the critical temperature (~1850 deg. F) and cooled very slowly to anneal it. There aren't too many ways to cut it other than abrasive.

    Looking into 3d printing

Rank newb here. I'm absolutely thrilled with my Bambu X1C. It is as close to plug-n-print as one could hope. So far I've used PLA, PLA-CF, PETG, PETG-CF and TPU. It has handled them all without drama. Coming from a metal-working background, I'm amused by complaints about the price. What kind of...

Practical VFD use for VFD newbies

I can confirm that P34 does control the startup acceleration rate. I doubled it to 50 Hz/S and the mill starts up more like normal.

    Physical activities…..

Keeping the wife supplied with firewood is where I get most of my exercise. Felling, limbing, bucking, loading, splitting, stacking and clearing the slash is quite a workout. Unfortunately, it is mostly a fair weather activity and the winters set me back. I recently went roller skating with our...

Practical VFD use for VFD newbies

In looking thru the parameters, I see P34 "Main rising velocity", for which the default is 25 Hz/S. Could this be the one that controls acceleration on startup? I will likely test this today, but thought I'd ask.

Practical VFD use for VFD newbies

Quieter and longer fan life. Not really necessary to cool something that isn't hot.

Practical VFD use for VFD newbies

I now have 3 of the Vevor 2.2 kw VFDs, powering my 1.5 hp surface grinder, 2 hp BP clone and 1 hp SB lathe. They are all working fine. I would like a little faster acceleration on the mill and have yet to find a parameter to adjust that, but otherwise I have no complaints. I am programming mine...

    The Faller Came Early

That's cheap to have a tree felled, ridiculously cheap to climb and piece it down, wood or no wood. It would have been $1k-2k to have that done to this fir. And then they would charge to haul the wood if I didn't want it.

    The Faller Came Early

I'm not afraid to fell a tree, but I also recognize my limitations. This one made me pucker just thinking about it, but it had to go. Doug arrived at 7 am Sunday. I was still working on my first cup of coffee and scarcely had time to set the camera up. He is 81 and quite deaf, but he sure...

    Drilling with the cross slide

No, that's another issue. I was referring to the toolpost rotating about the bolt that secures it to the compound.
