Remember I started with a Logan 200 that I had for over 30 years which was 10 x 24.
The one dimension that surprised me the most was the length, a 36" bed lathe footprint is almost the same as 24" bed, this is primarily based on the catch tray.
I'm not knocking the old tech, just commenting on...
Consider the largest dia you'll ever turn, add about 2-3", largest length add 6-8", largest Dia thru the spindle must have that. Finally how much space you can give up for the lathe. These are likely your biggest compromises in determining your needs.
Modern lathes have a smaller footprint...
I've heard the same thing about various machining tools, equipment and technique.
I was never as a formally trained machinist the but given with how little equipment I started with and things I've have read, done, shown and seen (seen is YouTube and it has filled in the minute gaps of...
This!
Thank you for mentioning it, I was about to post something similar.
One other thing that is important on a lathe is inside spindle dia. as it has a lot of effect on how large dia and length material can be.
A lot of the newer smaller lathes (well under 12" swings) have larger ID...
Using them on my CNC I can tell you that unless you're a gorillia regular nuts do not tighten enough when you do something stupid and your endmill will slip. The Ball nuts well easy to tighten and loosen, no slip.
IMHO it is worth to have at least one as there is a difference in how they...
Yes as I have 5 R8-ER32 holders, allows me to set 5 different tools, plus a couple of other tool holders approx 10 in total, remember CNC and I'm the HTC (Human Tool Changer ;)).
I bought 5 ER32 nuts love them easier to torque to hold bits tight. Definitely worth the investment.
Smaller than ER32 I don't think they are require, higher definitely.
