Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. Youtube- The curious origins of (the words for) imperial and metric units

I quite enjoyed this video, the background on where the names came from.

Most unknown to me was shoe sizes- each size differs by 1 barley corn… (and three barley corns make up an inch)

If you enjoyed those tidbits, you would also enjoy "Beyond Measure" by James Vincent.

Another member suggested it to me and I have thoroughly enjoyed it.

I also enjoyed “

The Perfectionists: How Precision Engineers Created the Modern World”

By Simon Winchester.

I'll have to see if I can find it. I love good books. Anyone who knows enough about a subject to write a book about it, is probably worth reading.

Would there be any truth that Canadian engineers would struggle with overpasses? We really don't do over passes up here, not like the USA does. It's one of those things "I heard" we had to import an engineer on a project.

I'm not saying our engineers aren't great, although the new Nipigon bridge did fall apart because the bolts broke 😀

I am always surprised that people seem to dispense with the “imperial system” and say Canada is all metric. If so?!, why can’t I get metric drill bits / like anywhere??? My boys work in the gas fitting business and it is all 3” or 4” or other “inch” dimensions….. no metric going on at all!

I don't believe it. Let's ask @CWret.
I showed you an easy go-around to stay off of the Burlington Skyway. I can give you more options to bypass large bridges in my neighbourhood during our next GTHA & Niagara field trip. Keep in mind that one of my careers was building bridges - so I have faith in my fellow engineers- dispute the screw up with the anchors at the Nipigon bridge. That was a cluster f*ck between design/specifications/contractor/inspection. I think it is a fair statement to say that i have installed or supervised the installation of more rock anchors than 99% of other Ontario engineers

PS1 - There are also easy ways to stay off of the Garden City Bridge. Next trip to Niagara i will show you a couple of options.

PS2 - yes, I can run a jackleg.

For the benefit of others reading this, tall guys often don't like heights. It's along ways down and we get hurt when we fall. I don't like heights. I hate that Niagara skyway. Waaaay too high for me. That's why CWret showed me some options. I was, and still am, most grateful!

For the record, I'll NEVER drive over the bridge between Austria and Italy at the Gros Glockner ever again. That Fkn bridge (over a mountain) gave me a voice change for 2 months. My wife called me a pussy. I don't know how I survived it....... Who the Fk builds a bridge over a mountain!

Well should you find yourself in this predicament again for G's sake don't stop or you'll see just how much they bounce and shake. A squeaky voice will be your least embarrassing reaction. 😛

Years ago We went to Miami for a vacation. When I got there We were forced into a 5 level traffic circle. We had never heard of them and it was rush hour. It took about 45 minutes to get out. I don't know how many circles I made to get out.

Years ago I think on “ you asked for it “ they showed just how much bridges were affected by harmonics.

It is not the harmonics that bother me. It's the raw height. I don't like being more than 8 ft above ground. In fact, sometimes I think I prefer 6 under to 8 over.

Once death from the fall is eminent, the hight bothers me less, it's the crippling pain filled, survivable, bloody heap on the ground hight that I really dislike .......
