WTB 10 or 11” swing metal lathe max 36” between centres

Long time lurker and just registered.

Looking to purchase a 10 or 11” swing metal lathe with a max distance between centres of 36”

Must haves:
-min 1” spindle thru bore.
- Steady or follow rest ( prefer both)
-110 v
-Power feed for cross slide

Interested in USA made like a Logan, but a Busybee / King Canada / Precision Mathew’s in no particular order would be ok too.

Prefer a gear box for threading.

Max budget is $3k.

Have tried to purchase from Facebook marketplace and kijiji but vendors don’t respond to questions for some reason so thought I would try here.

Sold my busy bee BL 227 a few years back as ran out of room and now have moved and have some more space.

Local to Calgary but willing to travel up to 200k if lathe is in good condition and price is fair.

Thanks.

Markit

You might be waiting a long while here man.

Machine tools out here are both rarer then elsewhere and usually more expensive by quite a bit.

I watched the machine markets in south AB for about 1.5 years and ended up finding an older machine I paid 4k$ for, not with much tooling but including a broken mill/drill. It would have met your requirements minus the price.

I’ve seen one machine that would fit your requirements and it was in Med Hat and gone in less than a week.

There was a fellow on the forum from Saskatchewan that sold a Kerry lathe for I believe 3500$ that would have met your requirements.

All I’m suggesting is be prepared to wait a long time, if you aren’t willing to flex on some things.

There is the odd rare screaming deal, but I never could find one.

Just using you as an example that there are machines around but like you said, it will take patience.

The 11" 2000 series has a 1 3/8 spindle so that could work for him but then there is the budget thing.

Thanks all. Been looking for over a year at used.

Modern tool has an 11” swing lathe on their website but they don’t carry it anymore. They were surprised when I showed up at their Calgary location asking to see it earlier this year.

Thinking I am going to head to busy bee and get either their 10x22 or the 10” gear head, I am getting tired of searching and their sale expires in early May I am told.

I looked for a crazy long time, then found that SM Utilathe.

I was freshly green in machining, and didn’t really know what I needed. I learned a lot with that first lathe, enough to realize there was a few things I didn’t know about lathes and that the lack of accessories and lack of spindle bore was a real problem for me.

In the meanwhile, I dumped a bunch of money and time into tooling for that utilathe and installing a VFD in it, basically none of which I recouped in the sale of the lathe.

I then purchased an almost new and almost fully tooled lathe for ALOT more money then I ever thought I would spend on a lathe, and now I’m happy. Available parts, every conceivable accessory…..

It’s an expensive hobby.

Buying something new, though expensive, doesn’t have as many “hidden costs” later…. And as you’ve realized by tracking the used market, in good shape, they don’t lose much value.

i love alberta though, but machine tools are a trick here.

@ Markit That fellow who sold a Kerry lathe in Saskatchewan was me. Was a solid built English lathe well taken care of complete with all the toys a man would need or ask for. It sold for less than what is suggest above more like 3-grand. New owner is happier that a pig in stink.

Check it out here folks: https://canadianhobbymetalworkers.com/threads/kerry-1124-lathe-for-sale-3-000-00-firm.11407/

Big mill also sold: https://canadianhobbymetalworkers.c...nk-is-another-mans-treasure.9187/#post-131131

@Markit If you could stand stretching your travel distance you might find something in BC lower mainland. I see lots of things advertised regularly on FB Marketplace - many might be larger than you want, but smaller lathes also come up regularly.
