I spoke to a friend recently, and after a great life of hard work, retirment friends and family now in late 70's he said they are "planning for end of life"
To hear him say that so casually I was really taken aback!
I planted owned a vineyard for 14 years. In the spring when the green shoots grew 6-12" tall the deer would come and browse, nip them off.
If the shoot even grew back, there would be a mess of 3-5 new shoots from the base, difficlult to manage then no fruit from that shoot position. Made me angry.
I hazed them with bangers, chase them on the quad (that was fun) but they keep coming back, the does with their young. Usually 2 does with 3 young. Those imprinted and come back to raise their own young. There are more than ever.
They are destrucive real pain in the ass, I do not love them.
I thought about bow hunting. I even borrowed a bow. They get within 10m of you
Not good if a doe ran to a neighbors yard and died there with an arrow sticking out of it, a trail of blood drops leading back to my farm.
My friends spend 100's of $ to go hunting I said why waste all that time and money. Just bring a couple lawn chairs and a 6 pack sit and wait for a cpl hrs. A properly placed 22 long to the head would do the trick and no noise.
My Phillipino friend that helped me on the farm had experience back home dealing with animals, cows and butchering. He wanted to set a snare trap then cut their throat. He was all happy said "I know know what to do!"
To dispatch a screaming thrashing deer, that might not be a good idea either.
Maybe its sick, but Im secretly happy when I see them dead beside the hiway near me.
