Weekly community thrift haul thread

View attachment 78691View attachment 78692View attachment 78693Not exactly a thrift store find but they're nice when you need them once every ten years

So I'll throw in this stubby that seems absolutely useless but came in a junk lot purchase to make my post stay on topic
That looks a lot like one I cut off some 40 years ago to slip inside a flattened piece of pipe that I welded at an angle to an impact socket to reach in behind the motor on an old Bobcat to replace a blown hydraulic hose..... getting the angle just right was a challenge.

I have selection of wrench’s and sockets that have been modified over the years for various one off jobs, in imperial and metric. Some were made from my “good tools”, but sometimes that’s all you have and it’s going to be the only way to get the job done. Now I also have 2 drawers full of sockets, wrench’s in both sizes just waiting to be modified, though often it is a size I don’t have that’s needed, why is that??? To small a wrench can be made larger, too large can be made smaller, welder if there’s one.
Had to make a few wrench’s for the shaper, neither standard imperial or metric, one or 2 much thinner. From a time when 32 seconds and 64ths it seems. Modified and size stamped.

I hit a bunch of thrift stores and pawn shops to kill some time on my way from downtown up to aurora for another marketplace deal (new golf driver). I picked up a bunch of baking sheets, and pans for another shop project, and this little guy.

Im a sucker for Canadian made tools, and Beach boxes especially. Im thinking ill ditch the coin tray and 3d print some inserts to hold some metrology and alignment tools for work. Or keep it together and give it to one of the kids to put rocks in.....

I keep the 1/2" thin wrench out of my set in my ratchet set . It gets used quite often pulling the carb bowls off the tractors . Before , I had to rummage thru the Vidmar drawers to find this wrench . They do come in handy .

PA have had thins and stubbys on sale the odd time, which I've found handy. I have a very thin, shop ground 21mm wrench (it's a BSW size) for adjusting the stop bar on the old SHOWA wire drawing machines I inherited when Peter retired. It's a good German one that I suspect the company supplied.. Funny how company tools are the first to be modified.

Today at the swap meet:

Lefax Machinist's Data book, $2.00. Printed sometime when a First Class postage stamp was 5 cents, as per the lost book instructions on page 1.

Well. I am working for the company (high tech) that is buying its own products that are circulating on the second hand market. Not exactly the same case, but still there is a company which is willing to pay to get their older products back.
