Wanted: CLAUSING 8520, 8525, or 8530

Hello Toronto Builder.
We have a Clausing 8520 mill available that we might part with, if the price was right.
Let me know if you are still interested and I can get some pictures together for you of the unit and get some details.
We also have a Craftex CX701ST lathe which we would also like to sell if you have any use for it.
We are located in Barrie Ontario.

I can confirm for anyone with a Clausing Mill, I'm still very interested in buying one

Are you looking for the bench top knee mill version @TorontoBuilder?
I only know the full standing version, which is like a tall bench top mill, with a stand that I believe is shorter than a standard bench height of 36"

There was a model called the 8512 which came with a Bridgeport M head,... but both spindles are MT2. I like the size because they're skinny with a narrow table so I can fit one in my tiny space, and can be disassembled and carried one piece at a time into a basement.

For a guy my size, it's still a bench top.......

But your rationale is perfect. I'll keep my eyes open. There is another similar mill that might your needs. If I remember the maker, I'll let you know.

I have seen a mill down in chatham, a garvin or something. hideously ugly and too big

Are you stuck on an actual Clausing, or if a Taiwan clone comes up is that acceptable?

Seems like one of the clones come up on Kijiji every once in a while, I can't recall seeing an actual Clausing for sale the last 2-3 years.

If there were an 8520 clone I would be surprised, but definitely consider it

Update, as of November 28th 2024 I'm still looking.

The owners of the mill I was previously contacted about are priced at the high end of the market, and I'm closer to the low end.

I'm looking for a project machine that needs restoration.

Like the Jackson Mill I'm currently working on:

Not helpful for TorontoBuilder, but I just brought home my first milling machine. It is a Clausing 8530 and needs some TLC. I’m going to tear it down and clean it up in the garage then move it down into the basement in parts and re-assemble there. That’s the beauty of small mill for me: I can move it with an engine hoist and transported it on my small trailer. Anyway, wish me luck that I don’t find anything nasty during the rebuild.

Sweet, good for you.

care to share with us what you paid? You can DM me and I'll keep amount private if you wish

ps you suck

Such abuse! And on my very first post! I’m living just north of Pittsburgh, PA and I paid 1500 USD for the mill, including an Enco vise, low cost BS-0 dividing head, MT2 collets, Jacob’s chuck, and a bucket of end mills. The table needs about .020” taken off the top to remove a bunch of end mill marks. Spindle ID TIR is .0002” and everything moves. I’m going to replace the treadmill motor that’s on there now, but haven’t researched anything yet. Probably VFD. Any suggestions?

First off, use steel filled epoxy to get rid of the pecker marks. Taking off 20 thou is difficult and often done wrong. Steel filled epoxy will look great. After some use, you won't even see it anymore. Just make sure to take it off flush or slightly lower - never proud.

I am such a fan of VFDs that I wouldn't care if the OEM stuff were still there. It would get a 3ph motor and a VFD. Do a search on the forum for VFD to get a sense of what they can do for you.

I helped rescrape a sister mill of smedley’s. It’s probable the top of table is bent convex from overeager clamping force over the years. If so, a rebuild will get rid of some of the apprentice marks. Unless you want to peen the table bottom to warp the table into flat. (Not my preferred, but some pro rebuilders do this) Personally, I’d just use the machine until you decide if you like it.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll check the flatness on a granite. I’m planning to have a machine shop surface grind the table top. My buddy had it done on his BP and it came out great. ($115). I will use the same shop, but taking your advise, only after I get some run time.

The joys of being US based hobby machinist... experienced machine tool grinders within a hop skip and a jump.

My jackson No.2 Mill table was abused in one spot, very ugly, so I'll presume it is also bowed. I dont have any easy option for regrinding the table here so I hope to be proven wrong.
