  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Had some free time waiting for my daughter to arrive. This is as good a place and time as any for a Lathe Checkup List

Bring a Dial indicator, a Dial Test Indicator, a magnetic indicator stand, a short piece of stock to test spindle bearing runout, a long test bar to test bed wear with carriage travel, and a nice bright flashlight.

Note that a used bed check does not need to include alignment since that is always done when a lathe is moved anyway. The lack of alignment is not an indication of the condition of a lathe.

Read a manual on that lathe to see how it all works.

I'm pretty sure that all small lathes sold new today include not just the 3 & 4 jaw chuck, but also a facepalm faceplate. I didn't see that on the list. Perhaps less vital, but if there originally was one there should still be one included.
