Unable to attend the Ottawa BBQ - had a good excuse

The farm German Shepard bit my face when I was 10. There was no yelling or anything. Just a rifle shot in the distance and a dog that didn't come home with my Grandpa.

I've had 45 to 100 pound Drahthaars most of my life. The first ones were what they called sharp and were sometimes used as gaurd dogs. The organization decided they didn't want sharp dogs anymore and changed the breed standard. Then they set about to deliberately breed sharpness out of them. Sharp dogs were removed from the gene pool. The last three I had were gentle as lambs. They would share their food and tolerate a child poking out their eyes. If you accidentally stepped on their toes, they would yelp but never even remotely fake a bite. I'd have another in a heart beat if my wife would let me. But our pet days are over.

It's kind of weird having a conversation with a dog in English and realizing that you're pretty sure the dog understood everything
My last border collie was exactly like that. I swear he understood an amazing amount of words and at times knew what I wanted before I'd even get the words out. I'd say something like " Ya Amigo, I don't think you should be in here" and he had already started to head out before I had finished the sentence.

Some border collies are smarter than their owners! It is unreal how they can read our body language and understand a minimum of 200 words.

Lots of dogs are really smart and lots are really stupid. It's the same as with people.
I think lots of people simply get the wrong dogs.
If you think your border collie is stupid because it won't stop barking in the back yard all day when you only walk it twice a day for 10 minutes, it's not stupid, it's effing bored out of it's mind. Dogs need jobs. If you don't give it the job it is genetically suited for, it will become self employed and that is usually not a good thing. You don't need to get a herd of sheep, but get it involved in something requiring lots of running. They want to control the movement of what's around them. If it's not going to be sheep or ducks or tennis balls or frisbees, then it's going to be kids or cars or pedestrians or the mailman or the neighbour mowing the grass. If people would simply get a dog that suits their lifestyle instead of what their 5 year old saw on Disney last night, things would be easier for everyone.
