Ultra thin tool makers foil

Hi All,

Ultra thin toolmakers foil only 0.0003" thick. It is so thin, I can't even get a piece off of the coil without it tearing and wrinkling. Any ideas?

When I learned how to do gilding I used the long side of a badger hair brush to pick up the gold leaf. Maybe try a natural bristle brush?
Plus one on this idea... assuming the foil is on a tissue like backing you should be able to lift it off via static charge on a brush.

then very lightly lay onto location and lightly brush away wrinkles to get foil flat.

If it is like gold, silver or copper leaf anyway

Hi All,

There is no backing on the foil that I can see. As well, someone in the past must have dropped the roll on something like a hard concrete floor as some of the roll outer circumference has been mushed over making it even harder to seperate.

I will try some of your suggestions though.

@carrdo - Try some canned wind. The straw will help you direct the air where needed.

Even if it doesn't work its always handy to have a can of wind in the shop.

Need wind? We will not miss a can of it here in Alberta! Could maybe send it “air freight”. If close to Ottawa, it could be warmer wind.
Warming up here, -2 this morning, -16 yesterday morning, maybe get to +6 in afternoon. Only 4 or 5 more months of winter!

@carrdo - yet another thought about using a can of wind. Don't hesitate to blow the air with the Foil roll instead of against it - I know that isn't intuitive, but the air flow over the foil will create a light vacuum that could lift the Foil.
